Lesson number four - unfortunately for 'em - is (to quote from the text itself) a long one that afternoon... It's a real classic - Absent-mindedness in a Parish Choir by Thomas Hardy, from the novel Under the Greenwood Tree. It needs no further introduction, at least, I don't think so. The carol, in keeping with the country mood, is from Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. You'll know the words, and recognise the tune, but this version heard back to the folk roots of all Christmas carols, of which I'll say a bit more tomorrow.
