The Weekly Rune – Nauthiz

Nauthiz – Need – Visited just last month by this stave, we again find ourselves at a pause with this middle stave of the second ǽtt’s winter trio. Having greeted us several times this year, We’ve had many such pauses, and by now know to take them seriously.

Situated between Hagalaz (harsh external change) and Isa (processing outcomes), Nauthiz forces us to confront our limitations and what we’re getting out of them. By that I mean, it highlights the things we say we don’t want, yet hold fastest to. This stave is the niggling feeling that all is not well, without knowing what needs attention. However, often just honoring that something isn’t right is enough to bring mild reprieve, perhaps even movement toward resolution.

In order to meet a need, we have to be able to recognize it when it comes on the scene, then choose to either fulfill or reject it. One way or another, something has to give. We choose to preserve self and fulfill or reject that need, or we stay locked in karmic purgatory stewing in our own fears.

The choice is ours, though Nauthiz brings the leverage to be done with it. It is an omen that wanrs us to deal with the past now, before it becomes our future.
