C.K. Dawn’s youthful introduction into the world that is Sci-Fi
Today I'm thrilled to host debut author C.K. Dawn's guest post.
The lovely Petra F. Bagnardi asked me to write a blog about what it’s like to create stories in the fantasy/sci-fi genre and my experience as an author. I’m so honored that she asked me to do this, yet I’m nervous at the same time. You see, science fiction has always been a part of my life. I’ve never known a world without it. If I dare, you could even say it comes naturally to me. So how do I describe what it’s like to create fantasy stories when they have been playing in my head since my very first memories as a child? Ah! Maybe that’s where the story should begin.
I can remember the line of people and the unending painted brick wall that towered over my head. I can’t remember if it was hot or cold outside and I can’t even remember if it was morning or dusk, but I remember that line. I wondered what was so important that it was making hundreds of people stand single file for hours and hours. Come to find out it was a movie. My father had seen it when it first came out and this was his second or third time coming to the theater. It had been an experience he was eager to share with me unfortunately the line had grown with every passing week that the movie had been out. I had never seen such a mass of people before. The line stretched from the front doors all the way around to the back of the building and far beyond. The dingy, off white color of that brick wall served as my blinders and as a child it seemed that it would never end. The next thing I remember was the darkness of the theater and then boom, an orchestra of music introducing bright yellow words scrolling off into space at an unusual angle. That uniqueness alone grabbed my attention. Then, I heard the adults’ collective gasp as a starship travelled through space and darkness directly over our heads as gracefully and peacefully as a whale swimming in the vast ocean. It was the most massive thing I had ever seen and it just kept going and going. Suddenly, the battle began and I heard more oohs from the audience. I couldn’t figure out their response. Yes it was spectacular, but this is how I saw things visually in my mind all the time. I came to find out later in life that the special effects in the movie were cutting edge and had never been seen or done before. And, yes, if you haven’t guessed by now the movie was Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Oops, I just showed my age.
Both my parents were, and still are, huge science fiction fans. Growing up I can remember Star Trek always playing on the television. The Jetsons was one of my favorite cartoons. And, The Smurfs. I mean, come on! Little blue creatures living in mushroom houses! How cool is that for a kid’s imagination? There were even stuffed-animal Tribbles in outer space! Yes, they wreaked havoc, but how many non-pedal creatures can be so cute doing it? My parents never made me feel like I HAD to love sci-fi as much as they did and they never forced it on me. It was just always there in the background of my life, like a favorite stuffed animal you cuddle up with to keep the real earthly monsters at bay. Horror and stalker movies scare the hell out of me and I still have to sleep with the lights on if I happen to watch one.
So you see, writing in the sci-fi/ fantasy genres comes pretty naturally to me. It’s who I am. But, if I ever write let’s say, a murder mystery involving only humans without a spec of star stuff anywhere in the story, I will absolutely share that uphill internal writing battle with you here on this blog first.
As for my experience as an author, there have been highs, not too many lows, and (knock on wood) I haven’t really experienced any major writer’s block, but, without a doubt I have to say writing about infinite possible worlds and creatures is the best job in THIS world!
