Learning to Drive :: Day Five :: Halfway There
I’ve just finished today’s three hours and I’m sitting here in the leathery living room of the school feeling rather elated. I’ve pretty much nailed my awareness of the car and its dimensions. I didn’t kill a single cyclist today, imaginary or otherwise. And I only made two small gear mishaps. In fact, in three hours of driving, I believe I only made one fail-worthy manoeuvre. Maybe two. Possibly three. But almost certainly no more than that. Which is not bad for the halfway stage.
As the lesson finished, I had a little chat with my instructor about my progress and he said that if my test had been today, he would still have put me in for it. This makes me happy.
Plus I still have another fifteen hours driving before my test in Blackburn on Thursday.
So, things are looking good.
I should pass.
But of course anything can happen on the day. I’ve just got to keep my wits about me, watch out for those motherbuggering speed signs at roundabouts – approach and exit, and follow the shit-stirring lines on big bastard roundabouts.
Piece of cake.
It’s a great feeling to feel yourself getting better at something. It could be anything of course. And whatever it is, when you feel it, it reminds you that really, it’s what life is all about. Self-improvement. It’s absolutely essential to feel like you’re making progress. When I look back on my own life, I think I’ve done OK. Year on year, I can see the progress I’ve made in different areas. Now that life is speeding up – and it definitely does as you get older; time literally passes more quickly: SCIENTIFIC FACT – I’m intent on working harder at getting better at being a human being. There’s so much I want to do. And I’m going to try really hard to do it.
Driving-wise, I’ve noticed also that I’m really starting to enjoy it. Obviously, the enjoyment comes with increased confidence and the ability to relax a little. And it’s such a pleasure. So I’m beginning to think about – all going well – actually having a car of my own.
Imagine!
The things I’ll be able to do!
The places I’ll go!
God, I’m excited.
For now though, I’m gearing up to a trip to Burnley and a visit to my old friend, NotKeith.
Have a great weekend.
Make progress.
Up, up and anon!
