Racial Intolerance and the price it pays

With the non-indictments in both the Michael Brown and Eric Gardner cases comes frustration for many. There is no getting around that the justice system often feels lacking for many people of color in this country. On a literary level I tried to reflect on this issue. Being a young woman of mixed race in a society where skin color plays a vital role in your life exist in many societies around the world, not just in the United States. How does it feel to be dark skinned in a society where most of the society is as dark as you are, yet strive to be lighter with creams and staying out of the sun because getting "too dark" will limit your chance of getting an offer of a suitable marriage or the chance to get a good paying job. This is the reality of many women in places like India, Africa and others. Natural Elements tells the story of a young woman faced with this issue--yet reveals how she learns to cope and finds her identity through the love and support of her family and close friends.
