Self Destruct is told in the dual point of views of Becca and Aiden. Two broken people that come together and try to conquer each other's fears of self destruction. To be each other's rocks and to allow their walls to fall. I would give Self Destruct 4 stars!Becca is a 20 year old virgin that has a slight fear of men. This comes from her past as a child who had a gentleman take things a little too far. Her parents, not wanting to make a huge deal out of it publicly swept it under the rug and attempted to move on. Eventually causing her parents to divorce. Her mother, however, holds a grudge. She can't seem to allow Becca to move on and have a life that every girl dreams of. Instead, she has to be hateful towards her.
"I've put up with this long enough. I've only been in this family for four years, but it is long enough to know that what happened was not an incident, but an attack. All of the other stuff you accused her of was only to cope with how little you supported her through this trauma." Rick, stepfather.
Aiden is a 24 year old stuck in a relationship that his parents (or should I say his mother) deem him to be in for the rest of his life. He doesn't love her and he's not sure he ever did. When he meets Becca his world turns upside down and he is sick of living the life his parents want him to and takes matters into his own hands.
"You will respect my relationship with Becca or don't call me. I don't understand why you would want me to continue Vanessa when I was slowly dying with her. What kind of mother tries to force her child into a life that will make him miserable?"-Aiden
I'd definitely recommend this one!
This started out as your typical love story but then turned into one very dramatic book. Chock full of ups and downs as well as twists and turns. Becca is a college student that has her own ways of coping with men. She has suffered from traumatic adolescent experiences that have shaped her views of men and relationships. She needs to do what is best for her well being. Aiden is a college student as well that has his own set of problems with love and life.
"I forced my eyes away from their perusal, before I did something humiliated like drool. I shouldn't let myself want something I'd never have." - Becca
Can this connection between these two individuals ever turn into something more?
Will Becca open up and let Aiden in? Will Aiden wake up and make some much needed changes in his life that are well over due?
"I want to be your only. I like that I'll be your first, but love that I'll be your last." -Aiden
I felt bad for both of these main characters a bit at times. They seemed trapped by their past and unable to escape it. They both trusted the wrong people. Luckily true love leads you in the right direction and helps you overcome obstacles…. TOGETHER Becca had a great support system that made life fun and interesting. It also added to the depth of the book.
Aiden is the type of hero that will win over readers hearts. He's so genuine and thoughtful. He's memorable! He’s a great catch! I’m sure you may add him to your book boyfriend list for sure….
This story had a touch of angst, great supporting characters, good dialogue, spice and lots of action. I found Self Destruct Destroy 1 by K.D. Carrillo to be drama driven, entertaining and poignant.
I give it 4 Desirable STARS!
Self Destruct by K.D. Carrillo is a story of taking control of your life, not letting others control your actions and to do what makes you happy. There were times throughout the book that I wanted to grab the characters and shake them for the decisions that they made, allowing outside influences and situations beyond their control to dictate how they lived their lives; and then there were times that I gave a silent cheer for the take charge attitude that they had; all of this making the story more intriguing. This story was a 3.5 star read for me and I would recommend this book to others.
Becca is a college student unlike any other. She struggles daily to rid herself of a past that haunts her; a childhood that traumatized her but that her parents don't seem to acknowledge as being a game changer. She has close friends that are like her family and she works hard to keep her life in order. She doesn't have room for guys or for love that is until she meets Aiden. Aiden has been carrying the guilt of a situation that was beyond his control, one that has kept him from being happy for a very long time. Although his long-time girlfriend was cheating on him and doing little to hide it, he refused to go as far as to sleep with any other girls as it felt wrong to him. Aiden feels that he is set up for a life without love due to his family obligations to his girlfriend, that is until he sees Becca on the beach.
Becca goes to the beach to rid her mind of the guy that she has been very casually dating. With her best friend by her side, she is determined to have a good time and that is where she has her first encounter with Aiden. Aiden is enraptured by Becca from his first glance, watching her attempt to jet-ski. After spending a little time with her, he realizes that she is an amazing person, which goes along with her beautifully simple look. It is the time that he spends with Becca and the idea of actually having a relationship that he wants to be in, a girl that he can see himself loving and wanting to spend time with that has Aiden doing something he should have done many years ago. He breaks up with his girlfriend, much to the dismay of his mother and begins seriously dating Becca.
It is the interference from their families, the struggles to deal with the past; and both Becca and Aiden's, that keeps this storying intriguing and different from all of the other college love stories out there. I would highly recommend that everyone pick up this great book!
