I loved this whole series. The dual narrative, the mix of fantasy and dystopian, the two main characters, who I just adore. I’d say if you enjoyed The Hunger Games but haven’t picked up the Defiance trilogy yet, you definitely should.
- Caterina Sforza: A Renaissance Virago, by Ernst Breisach
So I read this one for school, for my European Civilization class, but it was something I’d wanted to read nonetheless. Picked it up in Stratford at a used bookstore and it turns out it was an ARC, from 1967. Definitely check out if you were a fan of the Borgias. If not this, then Elizabeth Lev’s bio on Caterina (which is a little easier to find).
- Deliverance, by CJ Redwine
Last book of the Defiance series. These books, I loved. That’s all I can say. Go read them if you haven’t. Go. Now.
- Snow Like Ashes, by Sara Raasch
I’d been curious about this book since I’d seen it on Tea Time and I was so glad I picked it up. Lots of feels. And though it wasn’t fast paced to start (for me, at least), I really enjoyed the way it picked up speed as I read, until I got to the end and needed more.
- The Raven: Tales and Poems, by Edgar Allan Poe
I read this one for Halloween after picking it up from my university bookstore. I can’t remember the last time I’d read a collection of short stories, which was nice for the subway ride downtown, since I could get a few done in one trip.
- The Madman’s Daughter, by Megan Shepherd
I don’t usually do historical fiction because if I pick up on any little inaccuracies it bothers me, generally for the duration of the whole book. But I loved the idea of something being based on classic horror tales, and with the third book coming out being based on Frankenstein I had to start this series. Finished at 11:58 on Halloween, getting it done just in time. And that ENDING. Ugh.
