Counting your blessings
Liam shuffled into group 15 minutes late.
"How are you doing?" I asked him.
"My parent's land in France just doubled in value because a French developer needs a small parcel to build a hotel," Liam said. "They'll make a boatload of money, keep their vineyard, and stay drunk forever. There's no justice in the universe."
"Why wouldn't they have kept the vineyard without this sudden windfall?" I asked.
"My mother would've run it into the ground. Now they can afford someone to run it for them."
"Why does that bother you so much?" James asked.
"I guess I resent him making all that money without earning it," Liam said. "And, I was hoping my last escapade would be a wake-up call for the whole family. We'd all get sober together. Now they're getting even crazier. Nude beaches. Casinos. Trips to Amsterdam. Some young French girl who's supposed to be a housekeeper, but spends most of her time topless by the pool."
"Do you have any pictures of this French girl?" Emu asked. Julie punched Emu's shoulder. Nobody said anything to Liam.
"Hey folks, what do you think Relapse Boy would say to Liam?" I asked.
James, in a voice eerily like Relapse Boy's, said, "Dude, you got money, looks, and no Hep C. You never caught a felony. Why're you wasting time worrying about who got more and how they got it?"
Today I will count my blessings without worrying about who got more and how they got it.
