The Importance of Toilets!
I have just re-tweeted a tweet on @BillGates about India and toilets. Please take a look for yourself.
Several years ago I heard an interview with a person who had travelled in northern India. He had asked a young girl in a remote village something like "If you could have anything you wanted, what you that be?" This 11 year old replied "a toilet". She had gone on to describe how the boys in the village tormented the girls who (like everyone else in the village) used to have to squat in the dirt. This was particularly distressing when the girls were bleeding from periods. No sanitation let alone sanitary products like Tampax! The thought of those girls being teased still breaks my heart.
How would a Western teenage girl cope with the situation above? I suspect they would be horrified at the prospect!
What would you be willing to do to help the people in India, Africa, China or any other country where there is still a lack of sanitation?
I support Save the Children and Water Aid with very small monthly donations.
Are you willing to do something to change the lives of other people?
