11 Ways to Detox Daily
Do detox diets really work? As with all diets, it really depends on too many personal factors to establish whether a particular diet is the real thing. The good thing about detox is, it is a generally a good idea. We may not be able to prevent the onslaught of chemicals we are submitted to on a daily basis, but cleansing ourselves is easy enough. There are so many ways to rejuvenate your body and mind, from detox tea to weekend nature getaways, even the busiest of us can treat themselves from time to time.
Including plenty of fiber into your diet will prevent the very painful ailments that are a symptom of an unhealthy digestive tract, the most common being ulcers, reflux, gallstones, and constipation. Fiber significantly helps with bowel movements, so choose fresh fruits and vegetables, beans, grains and legumes over fiber supplements.
Drink plenty of water, and add a lemon slice for that extra rejuvenating oomph! The mistake most people make is that they drink water only when they’re thirsty and by then, your body is actually severely dehydrated. Change the way you look at your water intake. Drink whenever you can, not when you feel like it. In fact, pour yourself a glass of water this very instant. Make the 2 liters a day a challenge you complete. Daily.
Taking tea early in the day will give you a healthier energy boost than coffee will, and it will satiate you, leaving less room for lunchtime bingeing. The best part about tea is the diversity: maybe you’re an English tea person, or maybe you like lighter herbal mixtures, or maybe you would like to alleviate stomach cramps, in which case you should go for ginger, peppermint or chamomile. There are even specialized weight loss teas, and detox teas, with complementary diet programs.
You cannot live on liquids alone, but a revitalizing smoothie instead of a meal a day is a stimulating change to your meal plan. Whether you take breakfast in the morning or not, a smoothie will keep you satiated for the entirety of the morning rush. If you are willing to sacrifice all the rules of healthy eating because you’re having midnight cravings, whip yourself up a smoothie, there is no shame in blended greens and some water, no matter the hour.
Cut down on sugar, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, processed foods and white flour. They are all unnecessary and quite avoidable, with no significant nutritional values, and you are paying for your moment of artificial relaxation with cholesterol, dehydration and a guilty conscience. Naturally, don’t immediately switch into a mode of abstinence, instead, try putting one teaspoon of sugar less each time you drink coffee, control yourself when eating chocolate – a row tastes just as good as the whole bar. Have you even tried wheat pasta? It beats white flour pasta in taste.
Stress will easily poison your body. Breathe deep, learn some basic meditation (ease your mind without even leave your computer with Calm.com), take up yoga, and make it a point to focus on positive emotions rather than dwell on what might-have-beens more often. Sleeping 7-8 hours a night is not a luxury for some, but an obligation for all.
Exercise – this is a no brainer, and you really should start working out if you aren’t already. If you simply can’t motivate yourself to make exercise a daily routine, try a different course – join a free online community such as Fitocracy, and compete with friends. The reward system makes up for the lack of immediate weight loss that most people expect when they incorporate 5 minutes a day into their daily routine. Exercising will also straighten out your body and enhance digestion, a key element in the detoxification process.
Sauna The purpose of sweat is to rid the body of toxins, and this is why saunas were invented (actually, they were invented for bathing, but we now have bathtubs for that). If you have no way of steaming your whole body, a steam bath will work wonders for your nasal cavity, stuffy nose and puffy eyes, and can be performed at home. Just boil some water, preferably add some fresh herbs like peppermint and sage, cover yourself with a towel, and breathe deep! (Steam baths are a mini sauna for your face which is definitely a good business to get involved with).
Not any massage will do, in order to detox your system, opt for an intense one, like a deep tissue or sports massage, which will activate pressure points deep underneath your muscle tissue, and release the toxins building up there. You don’t want these toxins running rampant around your body afterwards, so be sure to drink plenty of water to flush them out.
By no means let a detoxification routine get in the way for obligatory drugs you are taking, but you don’t really need to medicate every symptom you experience. Aspirin should certainly be on your list of things that could easily be replaced with a healthier natural remedy. If you take medicine on a regular basis, see what could be replaced – too much of a chemical will have your body adapting to it, so some of your daily supplements probably do you no good anymore in the first place.
