The next time the group met, Michaela walked into the group room with a big smile on her face. When I asked her how she was doing, she announced to the group that she was not going to jail. She pulled up her pant leg to reveal a house-arrest anklet. "Ta Dah!"
Group members congratulated her on getting house arrest rather than jail time.
"Celebrate, but don't forget how scared you were," I cautioned.
"I knew you were going to say that!" Michaela said. She held up a notebook. "While I was waiting to hear from the judge, I wrote down all the reasons I didn't want to go jail."
The group asked Michaela to read her list. Most of it was about how she'd miss her son. A lot of items were about the small freedoms that allow us to enjoy life. A few surprised me.
Today I will celebrate the people in my life, and the freedom I have to enjoy life with them.
