My top 10 Fictional Boyfriends and why my husband earned the dedication of my first book.
Who is your fictional boyfriend? Come on, you know you have one. My problem is, I have too many. I'm kind of a fictional tramp actually.
I've often heard people complain that in books the love interest is too perfect. Personally, I don't complain when that happens. I just fall in love and then have to add another name to my list of fictional boyfriends. And when I'm writing I think that's a lot of the fun--to create a guy I can absolutely fall in love with.
Ryan Miller, (the love interest in Being Jamie Baker) is definitely my fictional boyfriend. But he's a little different though. He's kind of my fictional boyfriend as well as my real-life boyfriend because he has a lot of the same traits as my husband. For instance Josh never gets angry and he's impossibly optimistic. (This meshes quite nicely with my pessimism, but I can find it every bit as annoying as Jamie does sometimes.)
I won't bore you with the entire list of traits I stole from Josh to create Ryan Miller, but I will let you in on a secret about the book's dedication. The dedication reads: For Joshua, the original Ryan Miller This sounds incredibly sweet and sappy and I did do that on purpose because I do love him more than life itself. But the truth is, he earned the title of Ryan Miller mostly because of his ego. *snicker* If my husband and Ryan ever met in real life they would spend the entire time telling each other how awesome they are. (My friend Summer can attest to this!)
There's a line from a Justin Timberlake song that says, "Is it really cocky if you know that it's true?" I think that sums up both Josh and Ryan's way of thinking quite nicely. In fact, my husband refers to the project he's currently been working on as "Einstein's Baby" because he says that if Albert Einstein and Alfred Hitchcock ever had a love child it would be this project he's working on--that's how awesome it is... Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this about my husband. He's cocky, and yet he's still very humble in a lot of ways which makes the ego completely endearing.
So Ryan Miller = easy going, optimistic, happy, & slightly egotistical = my husband = my fictional boyfriend.
While I'm completely faithful to my Husband, I cannot claim the same for my fictional boyfriend Ryan. (Sorry Ryan, perfect guys may be hard to find in real life, but in the fictional world, I'm afraid You're a dime a dozen.) Which is why I have dozens of fictional boyfriends. I'll just list my top ten though. I should say current top ten since I'm completely fickle about my favorite anythings...
My Top 10 Fictional Boyfriends (Other than Ryan Miller)
1. Mark Darcy from Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice 2. Ian O'Shea from Stephenie Meyer's the Host.3. Jace Wayland from Cassandra Claire's Immortal Instruments series4. Edward Cullen from Stepheine Meyer's Twilight series. (Let me be clear that I mean Edward from the books and most definitely NOT the movies--which, if you ask me are two completely different characters. However, since I've vowed to try my best not to spend my life ranting about how much I hate those movies, I'll stop there. Oh, except that also when I say Edward Cullen do I in no way mean Robert Pattinson!)5. Rob Wilkins from Meg Cabot's 1-800-Where-Are-You series6. Caleb Becker from Simone Elkeles's Leaving Paradise (Which reminds me--I NEED to read Return to Paradise!)7. Theodore "Laurie" Laurence from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women 8. Cinna (What is his last name? Anyone?) from Suzanne Collin's Hunger Games Series9. Ash (The Winter Prince, does he even have a last name?) from Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series10. Gilbert Blithe from L.M. Montgomery's Anne Of Green Gables
So, now that I've shared my top 10 it begs the question, Who are your fictional boyfriends? Come on people, lets hear 'em!
