The 1st of October

October, the time of leaf fall and fruit harvesting. In Welsh it is called Hydref, meaning the month of AutumnIn the Gaelic it is An Damhair, meaning the month of deer ruttingIn Anglo Saxon, Wintirfyllith, the month of the winter moon
But whatever it is called this is the month for blackberrying, sloe pickingand gathering crab apples.
They say that if the October moon comes without frost, expect no frost until the full moon of November.
This month hot drinks and meals be goodTo keep thy health and nourish thy bloodProvide warm clothes and go foot dryThou shalt escape much danger thereby Neve's Almanack 1633
