Fire in the Woods Blog Tour: Is there anything wrong with a “nice guy?” by Jennifer M. Eaton

Lately, after reading novel after novel with romantic themes, I have to wonder… what ever happened to the “nice guy”?

I mean, is there anything wrong with being a nice guy these days?
Page after page I turn has been filled with overbearing, sometimes obnoxious males with egos bigger than their book’s word counts. I sometimes cringe, because I could never see myself falling for a guy like this.
Okay, I will be honest in saying I like the “bad guy” look… the whole denim or leather, with just a hint of stubble… I get that. It is fun to look at, but when it comes right down to it, I want the complete opposite of the alpha male that has become the “norm” in so many novels.
I think this is how the character David from my novel FIRE IN THE WOODS came to be. I don’t think it’s much of a spoiler to tell you David is from another planet. He steals the appearance of a famous human actor, and tries to pass himself off as a “local.”
If you can guess, it doesn’t quite work for him.
David, despite being a vision of teen hotness, is kind, shy, courteous, and really has no idea how good looking he is, or even what it means to be physically attractive. He couldn’t be less full of himself if he tried!
He was a great character to write, and I think he is very different from so many other heroes out there because he is really so believable.
David is the guy who you always wished you’d meet, and the guy you wished your daughter would meet (except for that whole ‘being an alien’ thing—that could be a bit of a turn off. I mean, no parent wants their kid involved in a long distance relationship, right?)
Anyway, David is proof that nice guys don’t always finish last. They may not get to the finish line as quickly, and they might not tick people off with their bad attitude along the way, but in my mind, that’s a good thing.
Well-mannered guys shouldn’t feel second rate. Ever.
Let’s hear it for the nice guys!

ABOUT FIRE IN THE WOODS: Publication date: September 2014
When a plane crashes in the woods near Jess’s home, the boy of her dreams falls out of the sky—literally. But David’s not here to find a girlfriend. He’s from another planet, and if Jess can’t help him get back to his ship, he’ll be stuck on Earth with nothing to look forward to but the pointy end of a dissection scalpel.
But her father runs their house like an army barracks, and with an alien on the loose, Major Dad isn’t too keen on the idea of Jess going anywhere. Ever. So how the heck is she supposed to help the sweetest, strangest, and cutest guy she’s ever met?
Hiding him in her room probably isn’t the best idea. Especially since her Dad is in charge of the squadron searching for David. That doesn’t mean she won’t do it. It just means she can’t get caught.
Helping David get home while protecting her heart—that’s gonna be the hard part. After all, she can’t really fall for a guy who’s not exactly from here.
As they race through the woods with Major Dad and most of the U.S. military one breath behind them, Jess and David grow closer than either of them anticipated. But all is not what it seems. David has a genocide-sized secret, and one betrayal later, they are both in handcuffs as alien warships are positioning themselves around the globe. Time is ticking down to Armageddon, and Jess must think fast if she’s to save the boy she cares about without sacrificing Earth—and everyone on it.
