It has been thirty years since World War III. The United States is now ran by a communist party. By the time you turn sixteen, it has been decided what class system you will be placed into. It all depends on the decisions you make leading up to your sixteenth birthday. If you show any sign of contempt or hate toward the communist party, you are cast into the lower class system and subject to cruel punishments, with no one to help you. One must obtain permission from the leader in order to pursue a career, marry and even have children. If you are denied, there is nothing you can do about it.
Clara Mitchell was lucky enough to be chosen to remain in the upper class system with her father or so she thought. She hasn't always been lucky though. When she turned sixteen, on the day of her casting ceremony, her mother was cuffed and taken away. Her father told her it was because of the crimes she had committed against their Leader. Three years later, as she and her fiance Jonathan Blake were walking home from a movie, they were brutally attacked.
