New Author Problems
****First things first: the ebook (Kindle) version of Mexican American: A Novel Inspired by Real-life Events will be available for FREE on Amazon.com on 9/15/14, 9/16/14, & 9/17/14. Even if you don't have a Kindle, you may download the ebook and read it via the free "Kindle Cloud" on virtually any computer, tablet, or smart phone. To locate the book on Amazon.com, simply search for "Mexican American Novel" within the site.
That said, here's my first blog post! Back in August, my first step to advertising my new novel was to post the cover on my Facebook page and "announce" its release. Little did I know that would cause a tremendous amount of controversy. The novel is a fictional account of another person's story. The cover contains a sort of mash-up of the American flag and Mexican flag. Right off the bat, I received very political comments about illigal Mexican immigration into the United States -- this, before commenters even had the opportunity to read the story synopsis (which was, at the time, not yet published). Certainly, the novel provides interesting insigh to Mexican immigration. However, the novel was completed before illegal Mexican immigration was a major news headline. My book was not written with a political pretense. It was written to tell a story of an incredibly spirited, tough, determined, fighter of a woman.
Controversy aside, I am really enjoying hearing feedback from readers who are reporting back their strong emotional response to the novel. Readers are drawing from the naturally occurring themes, such as immigration, child and sexual abuse, foster care, teenage pregnancy, poverty, and healthcare.
Most of all, I'm glad that a story like this will be heard. Thank you for reading it (and be sure to take advantage of the free download)!
