So you've previously gone on record as being a hair stylist before becoming the living embodiment of awesome female comic writers. Have you ever been at a con and seen someone's hair and just thought, "If only I had a pair of scissors"?
HA!
Not really, it’s more likely the opposite, I see someone’s hair and it looks amazing and I just can’t stop looking at it.
I was, honestly, a really, really good stylist, but my salon was in a small town and I didn’t get the opportunity to be as creative as I might like. When someone wanted a cool cut, that was just a very happy thing.
I let my license lapse ages ago. I only do my family’s hair now, I have my own hair done by someone else.
The one time I mixed hairdressing with comics was AWFUL.
It was at a con in, I think Toronto, and this good looking guy agreed to have his head shaved for charity. I THINK for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
George Perez was going to shave his head in public, at the con. But the clippers they had were godawful, like they came over on the Mayflower, and the blades were dull. It was literally ripping the hair out of his scalp, and taking chunks of flesh with it.
So they called me over, and asked me to do it. And that was absolutely miserable…he was such a good sport but the clippers were so clearly hurting him. I tried them on him and I just had to stop, it was like performing surgery with a golf putter. I mean, the guy was bleeding, it was horrible. George Perez was lovely, he said it was our first collaboration.
ANYWAY, someone eventually got a set of cheap, but decent, clippers and I finished up, but I won’t do anything like that again. It was awful!
The very first con I went to, a female pro friend talked me into coloring her hair and cutting it in the hotel room, that was also a nightmare. Oh, and I’ve cut my husband’s hair after spending an hour in New Zealand looking for a workable pair of shears.
My own shears that I use are hideously expensive, it’s always a drag to try to do the same work with the stuff you buy at a drug store!
Short question, long answer, sorry. :)
