Interview with Ivory Quinn

Hi guys! I've got Ivory Quinn with me! She is the amazing author of the Darkness Falls Series and she is here with me for a little while. Tell me a little about your current release.

It’s the 3rd book in the Darkness Falls series, where you get to learn a bit more about Master Blue and his past and how he came to be part of the family at The Manor. It’s also, hopefully, a continuation of Noelle’s story, since you all wanted her to have a less nebulous future.

What are your writing goals for this year?

Um…If we’re talking about this year until December, I’d really like to get a first draft of the fourth book finished. If we’re talking about a year from today, I’d like to get the fourth and fifth book finished and published in that time.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

That changes every day. With the early books it was the catharsis at first, and then it was the readers and the journey. With this book and, to a certain extent, Redemption, I really just enjoyed the characters. Blue is a lot of fun to write, both because he’s a funny person but because he also represents the part of me that is rarely seen. It’s refreshingly liberating to release all my repression and inhibitions and just write him as the outrageous man we’ve come to know and love.

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, character, or...?

With me it always starts with the characters. I get an idea for a person and then the story just grows around them. I have a friend who recently saw Patrick Ness at the Edinburgh Book Festival and the way she said he explained how he comes up with ideas is almost exactly how I do, but better worded than I could have managed! He says that he has a spark of an idea and then just lets it hang there while he throws stuff at it and sees what sticks. That’s exactly how it is for me. I walk through life with small everyday things sparking off ideas and tangents. Some stick to my characters and others don’t. By the time I sit down to write, the plot is almost fully formed and ready to go.

What did you learn from writing your first book or what do you wish you’d known before becoming published?

I learned that I had grossly underestimated the power of words. It was stupid really. Like many others, there are books I’ve read that changed my life in innumerable ways. It just hadn’t occurred to me that my books might affect others in that way so I was completely thrown by the response to my writing. I also learned that the book your readers read is not the book you wrote. They colour it with their own experiences and interpretations and that can be quite bizarre to experience.

How do you balance writing and everyday life?

I’m a hermit. No, really. I work hard and I write hard and then, twice a year, I promote hard too. Most of my interactions are with my readers or other bookish friends. I don’t feel like I’ve sacrificed anything though. Writing is my dream and it’s hard right now, but someday I’ll be able to quit my day job and achieve a slightly healthier work-life balance!

Who first introduced you to the love of reading?

My dad. He’s a big reader, always has been. I grew up in a house full of books so the opportunity was there. When it became obvious that I was even more voracious than he was, he took me to the library and didn’t bat an eyelid when I checked out ten books at a time.

And finally, why don’t you tell us three of your favorite things:

Cake. Jelly sweets. Men in kilts.

Now for the naughty! Super simple questions :)

Handcuffs or Rope? Rope

Whoo-hoo! Thank you. If you please, can you share a short excerpt of your newest release?

“You know, it would probably help if we had sex again outside of the play room.” He said, with absolute seriousness. “It’s when you leave things to stand alone that your psyche builds them up. If we were to go back to the way we were before Sean, it would just be that one time we messed around together instead of that big emotional event in the dungeon that changed everything.”

“We did have some fun before Sean.” Her voice was soft and warm. “You were a terror, you know?”

“I still am. You’ve just been blind to it for a while.” Hooking one hand under her thigh and the other under her waist, he lifted her upright to straddle him on the sofa. “I could make you forget everything, Red.”

“I know.” Breathless from the sudden shift in position, she steadied herself against his broad chest and looked down into his eyes. “I just don’t know if I’m ready to forget yet.”

“You want to find out?” He didn’t wait for an answer. Her eyes were wide with humour and he could see the lust stirring in their depths. She didn’t need to suppress her emotions with the time it would take her to think up a response. He caught her face and crushed it to his, claiming her mouth with a fierce hunger that had been too many months in the building.

She gave in with little resistance, allowing him to plunder her mouth with wild abandon. She tasted just the way he remembered and her sweet, gasped moans as he dragged her across his thighs were like rocket fuel to his cock. He ached for her.

“Blue.” She dragged her lips from his. “Phone.”

“Huh?” Glazed with lust, he reached for her again but she pulled back further.

“My phone is ringing.” Her breath was uneven and a smile of pride spread on his face before he could stop it. He’d done that to her. The tinny and persistent music was finally starting to register on his consciousness.

“Ignore it.” He squeezed her hips.

“I can’t. It’s Cal’s ringtone.” He didn’t need telling twice, releasing her as she pushed herself upright and rushed to find her phone. No-one ignored the master or kept him waiting. They might be the alphas of their own worlds, but they were definitely betas in his. Blue shifted uncomfortably in his seat as she answered the call. His trousers were so constricted they were almost painful. If she didn’t stop biting her lip, he wouldn’t be able to last the length of time it took to get her upstairs. “Yeah, he’s here.” She was saying and something about the way she looked at him doused his ardour. “Okay, we’ll be there as soon as we can.” She hung up.

“We’ll be where?” He asked, trying to ignore the fact that she was wriggling out of her dress as she made for the door.

“The Manor. There’s an emergency and Cal needs us there. I’m just going to change.”

“I can see that.” He said to the empty room as she rushed upstairs.
