VICTORIA VANE PLAYLIST FOR SLOW HAND
I have a very musical muse. What I mean is that I am unable to write without it and my music is always different depending onwhat I’m writing. Music also helps me to immerse myself in my characters. I tend to be drawn most to music that tells a story. While my playlist for my upcoming Cowboy series varies widely, (from the traditional country sounds of George Strait to the hard rocking Nickelback) all of the music serves to set the tone for the individual books.
My play list for SLOW HAND was almost all country music (some George Strait, Big and Rich, a smattering of Carrie Underwood and lots of Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton.)
Give it All We Got Tonight – George Strait
Rollin’ – Big and Rich
Wild West Show – Big and Rich
Got a Little Country – Blake Shelton
Cowboy Casanova – Carrie Underwood
In Love with The Girl – Luke Bryan
I Don’t Want this Night to End – Luke Bryan
Mine Would be You – Blake Shelton
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye – Luke Bryan
SLOW HAND opens with my hero sitting at an airport waiting for his flight. He’s listing to the mellow sounds of George Strait on his iPod when he first spots my heroine, Nikki who is traveling to Montana to bury her father.
Excerpt:
It was her ass he’d noticed first, couldn’t help it actually, since it was parked right in front of him at eye level. Clad in tight denim, supported by legs that went all the way up, it was a mighty fine, shapely, womanly ass, the kind a man liked to fill his hands with.
His interest piqued, Wade’s gaze roamed higher to light brown hair that waved past her shoulders. With her back to him, he couldn’t see her face or judge her age, neither could he hear a word she spoke with his ear buds crooning George Strait. Still, he was an observer by nature, and his innate ability to read body language had been further honed by his profession. Lacking any other distraction, he watched her, playing a game with himself to see how much of her story he could discern by her actions alone.
The youngish woman attached to the prime ass had a boarding pass in hand that she flapped at the apathetic gate agent whose attention appeared fully engaged in tapping on the keyboard, and staring into her monitor like it was a crystal ball. After a time, the wooden-faced woman glanced up and shook her head. Further fruitless argument ensued, at which point Wade pulled his ear buds to eavesdrop.
Hot Ass wasn’t getting on the flight.
In the next scene with my hero, he’s given up his seat to my distressed heroine, Nikki, and renting a car for an all night drive from Denver to Montana:
Excerpt:
His mind wandered back to the girl at the airport. He still marveled at the impulse that had spurred him to give up his seat. He wondered what might have happened had he been stranded in Denver with her. Maybe he would have offered her dinner. Maybe she would have accepted. And maybe they might have shared a room at the airport Hilton. He then shrugged it off as another lost opportunity, compounding all the rest.
Wade plugged his iPod into the audio jack of the rental car and then scrolled impatiently through various playlists in search of something besides the two cans of Red Bull to help keep his eyes open for the all night driving marathon. He settled on the blaring sounds of Big and Rich. I’m a dynamite, daddy, I’ll put the rhythm in your blues, I’m not a wishy-washy boy like you’re used to…Yeah. That was the ticket. Part country, part urban madness. Much like him.
Grinning, he punched the accelerator of the Dodge Avenger. And like any good cowboy, Wade drove off into the sunset.
After accompanying Nikki to the mortuary, Wade offers to buy her a drink. He’s eager to see her let her hair down but maybe gets a bit more than he bargained for:
Excerpt:
“Do you dance, Wade?”
“Not really, but if you feel like dancing,” he patted his lap,” knock yourself out.”
“Keep dreamin’.” Nikki rolled her eyes with a snort. She then idly flipped through the playlist attached to the old timey juke box on the tabletop. “Got any quarters on you?”
“Why? You got a favorite song?”
She flashed him a dazzling smile. “I got your song, Wade.”
“My song? Really? What is it?”
“You’ll see.” She laughed a throaty chuckle, dropped the coins he gave her into the machine, and then made her selection. The sultry tones of Carrie Underwood filled the air. “See?” she laughed. “I’ve totally got your number, Wade.”
“Cowboy Casanova? He speared her with those amazingly clear and sexy light blue eyes. “Is that what you think I am?”
“Yeah, I do. A big time sexy cowboy player, but I don’t do players and for damned sure not sexy chin-dimpled cowboys.”
