“A man is known by the company he keeps.” Aesop’s Fables
Before we held our first group meeting, I was more upbeat than I expected. I thought about how smart people in groups had done amazing things, like a moon shot with computers 1/100th as powerful as my smart phone. My head filled with examples of sincere people in groups doing amazing things, like helping people recover from addiction, starting charitable organizations, or funding research.
Just to wipe the smile from my face, the radio broadcast a story about the latest political shenanigans and deadlock. I was reminded that selfish people in groups can do amazingly self-destructive things.
The lesson for me was to be careful what groups I joined, and how I shaped those groups. In my experience, there were often groups within groups. I was reminded of the AA slogan stick with the winners.
Today I will stick with the winners, and try to be one of the winners.
