This reminds me of a video I saw a year or so ago of a polar bear who had made friends with a team of huskies in Canada, and every year returned to catch up and play with them. Professional opinions on that case were that the solitary bear had a need for play and enrichment that it wasn't getting elsewhere, so when the huskies treated it as a playmate it responded appropriately instead of seeing them as a threat or food.
