No Kindle? It Doesn’t Matter

Two years ago, my husband and I were taking a college class together and the night before the class started, I noticed that I had neglected to order the book. After a frantic search online and calls to every used bookstore in the area, it became clear that we were in trouble.

Searching Amazon for the book revealed that it was available on Kindle, oh if only we had one. So I had a bit of a brainstorm and ran a quick search to see if they offered a PC app that would allow me to read the book on my computer. They did, it was free and within 10 minutes I had installed the app, purchased and downloaded the book and was reading it. The day was saved.

Now, why am I telling you this story? It turns out that there are many people who would love to read Kindle books but don’t have a Kindle. I hesitated to buy one for several reasons. I love books, an eReader didn’t feel like books to me. It was one more bit of technology and we had a long discussion here about whether the number of trees saved would outweigh the recycling potential of the Kindle components. In the end, we used the PC app for most of that semester and I also bought a Kindle.  But, I digress…

The PC app is a great, way to gain access to  a lot of books (many of them free) that might not ever appear in paper format. For instance, as a child I was addicted to books by Edward Eager who attributed much of his inspiration to E. Nesbitt. Problem was that books by E. Nesbitt were darned hard to find. To my joy and delight, because they are now old enough to be in the public domain, Amazon had them available for free in the Kindle format. I downloaded all of them and even at the ripe old age of….now that would be telling secrets….I read and loved them.

So, for anyone reading this who doesn’t have a Kindle but would love to read a Kindle book, here is the link to the PC app. Now go forth and read!
