Knight and Trask: Secrets and Spies by Toni Sands

If my heroine, Katie Knight, was visiting Erotic Notions she’d probably abseil down a cliff or be winched down from a helicopter. So, thank you Daryl for the perfumed towel and reviving glass of brandy. Coffee? Ooh, yes please. And now I’ll begin.
I’d like to focus on the pivotal moment in my new novella starring secret agents Knight and Trask. When I gave Katie a near death incident on a training course in the Loire Valley, I brought her to the very limit of endurance. Lungs bursting, she almost expects to watch scenes of her life running past her eyes. As a female agent, working under cover in a world most of us can only read about or watch played out in movies, Katie has to be a tough cookie. After Trask saves his fellow agent’s life, a bond (no pun intended) is created between them.
Close relationships between agents is a no-no but as these two head back to their rooms, it’s clear their initial attraction is fuelled and needs only one gesture, one small moment, before it ignites into mind-blowing passion. I’m pleased my decision to put my main character into a dangerous position and keep her there resulted in a pivotal moment that in romantic novels usually centres on that first kiss.
Knight and Trask don’t forget that initial outpouring of lust. They both want to follow it up. Fast. What happens after that is something I hope you’ll discover when you read the book.
Excerpt:
Their bodies almost touching, she felt his breath warm her cold cheek. Saw the stubble darkening his chin. Somehow she managed to speak calmly. ‘Raptor’s upstream, heading south through the woods. If we swim underwater and come up just before the old mill, he’s toast.’            For a moment she saw admiration gleam in his eyes. ‘All right. But your lung capacity better do the business.’            Sliding into the freezing river, they swam below surface, giant frog kicks propelling them. Katie, eyes shut and holding her breath, felt her chest burn. Longed for Trask to squeeze her arm, his signal to surface. When it came, she tried to put her feet down only to discover they were tangled in thick pondweed. She stretched out her arms towards Trask’s reassuring bulk. But like a silent otter, he must have moved on. Lungs about to pop, she struggled to free herself, desperate to escape drowning.            She forced her eyes open. His face looming like a pale moon, Trask tugged at her with no success. Until a blade flashed and she felt his hands yank her upwards, before she could black out. She broke surface. Gasping. Spluttering. He pulled her towards a clump of bulrushes, maintaining cover. Katie sucked in air, grateful for the strong hands supporting her hips from behind. She’d never felt more vulnerable.            ‘Thank you,’ she whispered.‘Are you OK?’ Trask kept his voice low.      ‘Fine,’ she said.            ‘Let’s go.’ She felt his hands cup her bum cheeks, pushing her upwards so she could scramble on to the riverbank. Even through saturated clothing, his touch dissolved her reason.             Back at the chateau, they checked in before riding the service lift to the top floor, standing side by side in silence. She longed to caress him. Longed for release of the tension sparked by confrontation with and capture of their quarry. The lift halted. She exited first and turned to face her colleague.             He raised his hand. ‘Don’t thank me, Knight. It’s what we do.’            ‘This isn’t a spy movie, Trask. I was in a mess. You reacted quickly. I owe you.’            She watched him lower his gaze to her breasts. She’d unzipped her jacket, showing her T-shirt clinging like skin to a peach. She knew her nipples stuck out like stalks. Whether with cold or desire deserved debate.            He hesitated. Stepped forward. Reached out a hand and brushed his fingers down her cheek. The sensation shot through her, travelling straight to her core. It lingered, an urgent pulse with nowhere to go.
