"No, not Arya!"

July 11th is the birthdate of two important medieval figures, Robert the Bruce in 1274 and Richard II’s queen, Anne of Bohemia, in 1366. We discussed both of them recently, though, so there is no need to go there again so soon Also on July 11th in 1174, Amalric, the King of Jerusalem died unexpectedly at age 38 after a severe bout with dynasty. His death would have enormous consequences for history, for had he lived, there would have been no battle of Hattin, no fall of Jerusalem, and no Third Crusade. But I will leave it at that since I’ll be dramatizing these events in Outremer, the Land Beyond the Sea
So I’ll close with a scene from a recent John Oliver show; Oliver used to be Jon Stuart’s sidekick on the Daily Show, and did such a great job subbing for Jon last summer that he was rewarded with his own show on HBO. In this skit, Oliver had been talking about Game of Thrones and that segued into a brief scene with George RR Martin, supposedly hard at work on the next book in the Ice and Fire series. When Oliver asked what he was doing, GRRM flashed an evil smile and said, “I just killed three of your favorite characters.” Cut to scream of anguish from Oliver, who is then reduced to begging, “Not Arya! Please don’t let it be Arya!”

Sharon Correction on the above post It should read dysentery, not dynasty! They are making such fun of me on my personal Facebook page; I have some very clever Facebook friends.

Iset Am I the only one who doesn't like Arya?

message 3: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Probably, Isis. :-)

message 4: by Iset (new)

Iset I just feel like her character is going down a dark path and no good is going to come of it.

message 5: by Jane (new)

Jane As I remember, she was kind of blah from Book I [only one I read].

message 6: by Christine (new)

Christine I'm not a big Arya fan either, Isis. I don't hate her, but I'm very indifferent to her.

message 7: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Which characters do you all like, then?

message 8: by Christine (new)

Christine Jaime is my favorite, and growing more so as the books progress. I also enjoy Tyrion though his story line has gotten rather bland in the later books. Cersei I enjoy more as she becomes a POV character. As for the Starks, I actually really like book-Sansa and I enjoyed Robb as well. I also enjoyed Renly (because he reminded me of so many died-too-soon people in history) and Stannis entertains me too (so much teeth grinding!) Oh, I like the Martels as well.

Basically, I like most of them but the one I like least is Dany, and I am indifferent to Arya and usually Jon Snow as well though I started out liking him a lot. In the books the Arya and Dany chapters were usually where I'd put it down and walk away for a bit.

Sharon Interesting, Christine. Tyrion was my favorite in the books, though like you, I was not enthralled with his adventures in the 5th book And he has been brought to spectacular life in the HBO series thanks to the brilliant Peter Dinklage. I do like Danni and her dragons. Twyin was a wicked man, but Charles Dance's portrayal was so amazing that I will actually miss the character next season In the same way, Margaery was bland on the printed page, but Natalie Dormer is so good that she has transformed Margaery to a favorite for me. Oh, and I love the dyrewolves, of course! The one story line that does not interest me is Bran's.

message 10: by Christine (new)

Christine Ah, yes! I forgot about Bran- which, I think, says a lot about my opinion of his plot!

I find the television show to be rather wonderfully cast- and I do prefer Emilia Clarke's Dany to the Dany in the books, she makes her far more tolerable.

I remember watching a behind-the-scenes featurette on the episode this season with the trial- which was one of my favorite episodes- and they said that it was the first episode of the series to not strongly feature a Stark character. I thought that was interesting, and showed the large narrative shift of the plot.

message 11: by Iset (new)

Iset Well, Tyrion, Robb, Jon, and Dany were my favourites, although I must confess I'm beginning to lose interest in Dany. Sansa I like, though she's not a favourite, yet, but I sense that she could be, with the direction her character is going in. I don't understand why Sansa is so disliked - come on, if we're honest haven't we all said or done some pretty naive or embarrassing things when we were 13? Sansa's not an airhead in the early books, she's just inexperienced, and over time she gains experience and starts to play the game for herself - I really think she's going to be one of the best players of the game. Conversely, whilst I obviously sympathise with Arya's plight and the unfairness of what happens to her, and also in the beginning I like how she defies convention and forges her own path, like I said, I think she's going down a dark road now and no good is going to come of it, certainly not any happiness for her.

(P.S. Please nobody tell me what happens; I haven't read book 4 or 5, so I don't actually know what happens, I'm just saying what I guess).

message 12: by Christine (new)

Christine I never understood all the Sansa hate either.

message 13: by Sharon (new)

Sharon She started out as superficial, shallow, and naïve, but she has had to grow up fast. I think the actress who plays the role on HBO is amazing and does not get enough credit. I still remember the scene in which Joffrey forced her up onto the ramparts to look upon the head of her father. She realized that all she had to do was to give him a shove and he'd fall to his death. The actress conveyed her surge of emotions brilliantly without a word being said. I'd have nominated her for an Emmy for that scene alone.

Iset That was a brilliant scene, Sharon. Sophie Turner completely conveyed that possibility rushing through Sansa's mind without saying a word. Tywin is one I like better on the show - Charles Dance was just so very good. He reminds me of a relative - I'm sure every family must have one - one of those uncles who's three score and ten years old with the health and constitution of an ox and very firm ideas about how the family should be run. And of course I'm sure we were all cheering whenever he kept Joffrey in line. Pure entertainment.

message 15: by Charlene (new)

Charlene I haven't seen season 3 yet and just started reading book 1, but based on the first 2 seasons, I like Arya, Jon, Robb, Tyrion and Gendry. I cannot wait to see Sansa's growth in season 3 when I finally get to see it. Sharon, you are so right about that scene when Joffrey forced her to look at Ned. I was rooting for her to push her betrothed off the wall.

message 16: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Me, too, Charlene. That is one thing we all can agree upon--how satisfying it would have been to see Joffrey splatter in the courtyard below.

message 21: by Roberta (new)

Roberta I only just got HBO and watched all four seasons of Thrones in days. Glad to see there are more who love it here! I think I like Tyrion best at the moment...

message 22: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Tyrion is my own favorite character, Roberta, in the books and even more so in the series because of the brilliant portrayal by Peter Dinklage I so hope GRRM will be merciful and let Tyrion survive the series, but he is not one for happy endings.

message 23: by Roberta (new)

Roberta I will be devastated if he gets killed off!

message 24: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Roberta, I think thousands of us would want to march on Master Martin's house with torches and pitchforks.

Count me in! :)

message 27: by Christine (new)

Christine Shhh stop jinxing Tyrion. You know how these things work! The more beloved, the more in danger.

message 28: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I like Arya, but I'm worried about where Martin is taking her. I started out really disliking Sansa until I saw Sophie Turner portraying her in the TV adaptation-she has brought what was a rather superficial young girl to life.

I will also miss Charles Dance from Games-He is in Australia doing a film about WWI. How did he miss a nomination at the Emmy's?

Tyrion is a favourite but for the first time in the series I found his POV in ADWD, boring. I hope Peter Dinklage wins another Emmy. I like Jon Snow and hope that in The Winds of Winter-Martin will finally tell us about Jon's parentage.

There are so many characters I like, it is hard to pick only one or two.

message 29: by Leila (new)

Leila I have just bought the first four books in the series and also have had the first series on DVD bought for my birthday. Any suggestions from anyone as to which I should go for first; books or DVDs?

message 30: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Oh definitely the books! They give more depth to the characters and you get to see their hidden motivations through their thought process.

I do enjoy the TV adaptation, but on whole I prefer the books.

message 31: by Christine (new)

Christine I prefer the books too. I admittedly read all of the books somewhere between seasons 3 and 4 and wished I had read them first. I enjoy the television show, but the books are far better and as Rebecca said above me, the characters are far more developed in the books.

message 32: by Leila (new)

Leila Thanks Rebecca and Christine x I thought that might be so. I remember reading "Pillars of the Earth" and really enjoying it, but when I tried the TV version it was very disappointing. Starting today with the first book then! Have a good Sunday.
