Sailor Moon Crystal
I don't often have fangirl moments, but I had one this weekend. You know when you watch a childhood show just for the memories? Everything about it makes you so happy. A reboot of my childhood show, Sailor Moon, aired Saturday!
There's been this trend of people digging into the 90s and remaking the shows. It's been kinda irritating. I know the 90s were awesome, but seriously, leave my childhood alone. Remakes are never as good as the original. All they do is piss you off. If they do a Short Circuit remake, I'm going to scream.
Sailor Moon made up a good chunk of my childhood. It was one of my favorite shows and the first anime I ever watched. I remember one time, I watched Sailor Moon during vacation with the family and the episode ended on a cliff hanger. We were traveling home the next day. While traveling, I was watching the time hoping we'd get to a TV before 4pm. I had to get my Sailor Moon on.
When I wrote stories, I'd often name characters Serena and Darien after the main characters in the English version of Sailor Moon At first, I was a bit annoyed when I heard they were re-releasing a more modern version of a show that practically defined my childhood, calling it Sailor Moon Crystal. For those who don't know, Sailor Moon is one of the most popular manga/anime series, ever. It's like legendary. That is not an exaggeration.
So, what does this more modern version look like? The animation of the 90s was this:
After seeing a lot of newer anime art, I can't deal with 90s animation anymore. It's so bad. Now, Sailor Moon looks like this:

As I mentioned earlier, the first episode aired Saturday and I loved it! The art is amazing. The voices are on point. The character's fashion have been updated, thankfully. The 90s were awesome, but the style was bad. The opening and closing songs are perfect. I don't mind them changing from the songs I knew as a kid. I like the new ones better than the original.
So far, I'm happy with it. They redid Sailor Moon while keeping true to the original. There are slight difference. For some reason, they thought Usagi's transformation would be better with CGI. It wasn't bad. It also wasn't necessary. The name of her attack is now "Moon Terra Boomerang" not "Moon Terra Action." No big deal. The first episode is the same as the original. The reboot added a "moment" between Usage and Mamoru. From what I'm hearing, Sailor Moon Crystal follows the manga closer than the original series. In the 90s anime, Usagi was a crybaby that crossed the line into irritating. They cut that back in Sailor Moon Crystal.
I'm getting all the warm and fuzzies as I go down memory lane. Sailor Moon was like Power Rangers for me. This show stuck with me.
This was an amazing idea to reboot Sailor Moon. Already, the first episode has 313 comments on Hulu. If you've ever watched anything on Hulu, you know most shows don't get that many comments. Pretty much everyone in the nerd circle has been talking about this reboot for like months. Can you image what this is doing for sales of the original series and manga?
I'm hoping the reboot will move faster than the original. Though I love the original, we'd get like 10 episodes where the same thing happened. The plot do not move. Since episode 1 of Sailor Moon Crystal gave us a peek at Sailor Mercury, they may speed things along. The preview for episode 2 confirms it! It won't air for like 3 weeks.*groan*
