Eagle, man, and ox—Nock’s brothers opened their circle. “Now you.”
Tamaes drew his sword and put his back to Taweel’s. Keeping up was a struggle, but working in tandem felt right. “Is this what it will be like?”
Taweel snorted. “The enemy is rarely this polite.”
“I meant this,” Tamaes corrected. “You protecting me. My protecting you.”
“Yes.” The big warrior spared him a glance. “And together, we will protect the one whose name God places under your hand.”
“Soon?”
“Who can say?” Taweel fended off another blow before adding, “It could be soon, and I want you ready.”
