Send to Kindle

One of the issues that often comes up for writers (whether they be fiction authors or experts crafting a book for lead generation) is not feeling “inspired” or being “in the mood” to write.

I’d rather write than do just about anything, as evidenced by the condition of my house. I decided a long time ago that dust bunnies are CUTE and that getting my characters out of my head and into words is MUCH more fun than housework!.

In Search of the Elusive MOOD – DO you …

Have trouble getting into a mood to write?
Get stuck on a word while trying to stay in the flow?
Have trouble knowing your characters?
Find every excuse not to write?

You are not ALONE!

Part of being a writer is that struggle between creativity and practicality.

Here are some tips to help you find and hold the MOOD to write.

1. Don’t wait until you feel inspired.

The problem: Some days you’ll be plum tuckered out. Others, you’ll be distracted.

the cure? Decide on a writing time and stick to it.

The Cure: Writing and editing are like 2 hats. the editing hat is the cap of a schoolmaster, while the writing hat is colorful and unemcombered. Pick a session (or part of 1) in which you will write, and a different time for editing.

3.You won’t always “feel” inspired. Give your creative juices a nudge.

The problem: There’s always something that eels more urgent…or more interesting perhaps. It’s a decision to

The cure: Inspiration can be turned on like a faucet when you know how. Don’t expect to dive into your “real ” writing task. Simply start writing something completely different. Your creative brain will switch on for you after a few minutes.

Start with a news story, favorite song lyric, or tidbit of conversation that caught your fancy, and start writing whatever surfaces.

I’ve written entire stories, and even a novel, on that premise. A foggy day turned into my first novel.

Writing is a discipline, like anything else. Have FUN with it, give it lots of nourishment and love, and  you’ll be fine.
