Day 2 of our Summer Giveaway: Mawi’s Bookshelf

Day 2

Today you have a chance to win the 3 books rocking Mawi’s bookshelf these days!  These extraordinary works will transform the way you perceive education and your own ability to inspire youth.

1.) Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck, PhD: In this ground-breaking book, Stanford psychologist and researcher Carol Dweck synthesizes decades of research on what fosters success. Dweck reveals that it’s not our talent or ability that makes us successful, but whether we approach life with a fixed or growth mindset.  She emphasizes that a growth mindset is an integral part of motivating our children and ourselves to reach our goals. She further links this idea with academic success for students and demonstrates that a growth mindset is key for developing a foundation of resilience and a future of achievement.

2.) How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character by Paul Tough: Tough interrogates the traditional belief that cognitive skills such as verbal acuity, mathematical ability and the ability to detect patterns that are the best indicators of academic and future success. By synthesizing literature and research in this area, Tough shows that IQ based indications have been disproven as a definitive predictor for future success.  Increasingly, non-cognitive skills such as perseverance, conscientiousness, optimism, curiosity and self-discipline are proving to be better indicators for achievement. Tough argues that teachers need to build these skills while engaging student curiosity to promote academic success.

3.) The Optimistic Child: A Proven Program to Safeguard Children Against Depression and Build Lifelong Resilience by Martin Seligman: In his book, “The Optimistic Child”, University of Pennsylvania researcher Dr. Martin Seligman examines the concept of building confidence in children. By studying over 100,000 children, Seligman concludes that the self-esteem movement has actually harmed many kids. He concludes that the best way to help children achieve is to help them build real skills and praise growth, rather than praise fixed qualities.
