Advocating for a learner-centered approach often brings up the question, “Won’t my kids just play video games all day?” Although the answer to that is multi-faceted, we know that no experience is devoid of learning. And, in fact, some may have more opportunities for development than we first believe. Join our special guests Genese Davis (The Holder’s Dominion, MMORPG.com, The Gamer In You,) Eric Kieron (Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo,) Ash Monif (CEO and co-founder:Grimm Bros Game Studio) and Bryan Tillman (Owner – Kaiser Studio; Lead Artist - Dark Legacy: The Rising) discuss the benefits and potential drawbacks to video games and how to navigate both. This high-powered panel will plunge into video game culture and its social development divulging how video games affect our lives and education.
Genese Davis
Genese Davis is an American author, host, columnist and media personality. She is the author of The Holder’s Dominion, a next-generation video game thriller heralded as a breakthrough novel by Publishers Weekly. Davis is the founder of The Gamer in You and was recently awarded IGR Woman of the Year. She is a featured columnist at MMORPG.com and appears internationally for literary and entertainment events all over the world. Bryan Tillman
Bryan Tillman is currently the academic director for Game Art and Design, Visual Effects and Motion Graphics, Media Arts and Animation and Visual Game Programming at the Art Institute of Washington DC. He has an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design, with a focus in sequential art and a minor in drawing. Tillman is the owner and CEO of the Kaiser Studio Productions, a production studio for comics, toys, animation, and games. Within Kaiser Studio Productions, Bryan Tillman wears many hats: He is a sculptor for toys, and acts as the editor for all the comic books produced by the studio. He also does layout and illustrations for multiple projects. Tillman is currently working on a tabletop RPG titled Dark Legacy that is starting to make waves within the RPG world. Eric Kieron
Eric Kieron is an award-winning producer for film, theater, video games, web, and literary genres. He is passionate about producing high quality, creative content built to entertain. He is a cinematics producer for Blizzard Entertainment, and is the founder of the film production company, Sleepwalker Studios. As a director, he focuses on the creative vision of the project aiming to intrigue and excite an audience. As a producer, he has led teams from concept to completion on a number of premium projects. Ash Monif
Ash Monif is the co-founder and CEO of Grimm Bros, a video game studio currently developing the upcoming RPG title Dragon Fin Soup. Ash Monif become a creative in order to share ideas and connect with others. Monif attended Cogswell College, which at the time was the only school to get an accredited degree in game design. After earnestly applying himself to learn storytelling, digital art, project management, and game design, Monif combined all of these elements and founded and led a team of students to build games. Monif and his team became a finalist in the 2003 IGF showcase. This event launched their careers into the game industry. Monif has worked across the entire spectrum of the game industry from massive publishers to indie developers with past game credits including Sims 2, Lord of the Rings: TTA, James Bond: FRWL, Fort Courage, TinkerBox, Fieldrunners, Mercenaries 2, and Doki Doki Universe.
