The Reader's Bill of Rights...I Say, "Right On!"

I love anyone who's a rebel, as long as he or she has good motivation to be--I especially love reading rebels!! One of my favorite people in the entire reading world is Daniel Pennac. He came up with the Reader's Bill of Rights. I used to share this with my students. I firmly believe that if kids were given more power over their reading lives, we'd see more readers!! I hope you enjoy this as much as I do...and please feel free to spread it around.

The Reader's Bill of Rights

Readers have:

The right to not read.
The right to skip pages.
The right to not finish.
The right to reread.
The right to read anything.
The right to escapism.
The right to read anywhere.
The right to browse.
The right to read out loud.
The right not to defend your tastes.

—Daniel Pennac, Better Than Life, Coach House Press, 1996.
