Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo:
http://www.randomhouse.com/book/16017...

In which John kicks off the Nerdfighter Book Club's discussion on Katherine Boo's Behind the Beautiful Forevers. He considers the role of luck, global capitalism, and the hierarchies of poverty. I look forward to hearing all your thoughts about the book and continuing the discussion in comments!

Mayra So, "The fault in our stars"... Are you a sadist!?!?!

Don't ger me wrong, wow, what a wonderful story and the characters are amazingly well thought and so real that you fall completly in love with them...

Still, what is wrong with you?!?! God, I don't think I've ever been traumatized so much by a story, and I've read some Khaled Hosselini...

You're an awesome sadist, though.

Divine Traumatized? Here's the funny thing about life: we're all gonna die. Why not look into the "infinities in between" and ignore the inevitability of human oblivion, instead? Hope that helps.

Wade John, let me just say I read your book once, watched the movie 2 days after it was released (in Jamaica), watched it (again) 2 days after the first time I watched it, and I STILL can't get over that movie!!!

It was absolutely brilliant, beautiful, and all around amazing.

I bought the book on kindle, and I'm gonna get a hardcover print because this book is one to read, re-read and continuously re-read!!

And I am absolutely happy that the movie did that book justice (I was terrified it wouldn't...but it did, and I'm glad)

I look forward to more of your work.
"Di book tough" (the book is great)

Mayra It's not about life and death, although it appears to be the subject, the story is way deeper than that. John was trying to communicate something more important than "we're all gonna die, so it's ok". If you've ever loved someone like these guys loved each other, or are a parent with a sick child, you would understand why the outcome is so traumatic.

So quoting Augustus ("human oblivion") is not really gonna change my mind ;)
