Should Certain Books Be Banned From Schools and Libraries?
I may be a bit naïve when it comes to banning books because so many books have made an impact in my life and why I chose to be a writer, but I was shocked to find out that certain towns across the US have actually banned certain books from their libraries and schools. In some instances, they have actually burned these classics. There are a number of books that are constantly being challenged on a regular basis. Great comment Ann. I agree, I think parents should be involved in choosing the right book for the right age of student. It just shocked me at some of the books that people had problems with, but there are so many other books out there that would be much more "offensive".
As my daughter was growing up there were certain books that I felt weren't quite at her reading level (too mature), yet that her school wanted her to read but they also provided an alternate reading list and I helped my daughter pick one she would love. As she grew older she chose to follow a similar reading path as you and me. We both love crime novels, true life serial killer novels, and books that I am sure many people would ban if they could.
In the end, honestly, you can't really ban a book no matter how hard you try. There are too many outlets available to anyone who really wants to read them. It allows us with the passion to learn and explore life the opportunity to eagerly search out what we desire and gives us a greater sense of pride when we can pick up "To Kill A Mockingbird" and say, "I really enjoyed reading this book".
