Fabulous Friday: Put Your Paws in the Air ...

... like you just don't care! Okay, I admit it. My mind works in some unusual ways. If you ever need a partner in a word association game, I'm your girl. It's like the famed six degrees of separation (or Kevin Bacon, if you prefer), but on a weirder scale.

Take the title of this blog. I started out by asking myself what makes today a Fabulous Friday. The answer is easy. Last day of school. The next thought that came to me was, "Raise your hand if you're excited about school being out." Close on the heels of that exuberant idea came an image of that hamster in his hamster ball in the commercial about the Framily phone plan. You know, the one where he says something like, "I got my paws in the air like I just don't care." And now you see where my title came from.

Now that you understand that, put your paws in the air if you're excited about summer. What does summer mean to you? You know what it means to me? It means time with my children.

Wait. Did I hear a sigh? A snort? An eye roll, perhaps? (Yes, a trained Mom ear can hear an eye roll, and don't you forget it.)

Seriously, I love spending time with my kids. We play stupid games in the pool. We visit snow-cone stands. We have strange conversations in even stranger accents. We drive around with the top down on my Bug, Bluebell, singing at the tops of our lungs. And yes, at stop lights, sometimes we even put our paws in the air like ... well, you get it.

I know there are parents out there who dread summer. It's like that Christmas song that says, "And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again." I get it. I really do. There are days that my children aren't very pleasant to one another, and it's not fun to be around them. There are days when I'm trying to write, and they just. Won't. Stop. Talking.

But you know what? There are also days when I see the amazing young adults they are becoming. There are days when we talk about serious and thought-provoking subjects, and I get a glimpse of their astonishing and refreshing insights. And yeah, there are days when we just act goofy. Those are the days I treasure in my heart.

Parents, as my mother (and her mother before her, and her mother before her) used to say, don't wish your life away. Your kids won't be those goofy teens forever. They won't be those messy toddlers with their sticky hugs and kisses. Enjoy them. Take your time with them.

Now go have a Fabulous Friday, knowing you have two and a half glorious months with your kids. Make every minute count, and remember to thank God for all of them.

I got my paws in the air like I just don't care! (Admit it. You read that in a gangsta hamster voice. And you waved your paws.)
