I keep a pair of Army boots on my desk. They belonged to my uncle Eddie, a vet who fought in the Philippines in World War II (he was my inspiration for The Five People You Meet in Heaven). He was the toughest guy I've ever known. Today is Memorial Day and today I'll remember and honor him. Our attitudes have changed over years towards war and soldiers. Forget the political speeches and TV specials; I hope that the families of the best and bravest who never came back have the opportunity to do the same in simple moments: visit graves and put down flowers, open a photo album, share a meal and memories.
