A Suggestion for Summer Reading
If you are in the mood for a little–oh, all right, more than a little–suspense during the summer, the Finding My Escape, by Fran Veal, just might be for you.
Hannah Jordan’s parents are brutally murdered, and Hannah only just barely escapes. Her loving aunt takes her in, but that means that, on top of having to adjust to her parent’s death, she also has to adjust to a different home, different school, leaving her friends behind.
Well, almost all of her friends. Her conveniently hunky friend Matt finds a way to stay with her and her aunt. (Yeah, guys, you will have to put up with a few descriptions of hot guys, but trust me, it’s worth it!)
I know what you are thinking–generic teenage love story? No, definitely not. Hannah and Matt are just good friends…maybe. However, despite Matt’s support, Hannah’s ability to adjust to all the changes in her life takes an unexpected turn when she begins entering a different world in her dreams. Gradually, though, Hannah begins to believe this other world is real.
Yes, I know, you have read other stories with that general premise–but few of them are as well done as this one. The author makes the situation very difficult to figure out. Is Hannah really entering another world, or is she losing her grip on sanity? As a reader, you will quickly discover that there is no easy answer to that question. However, when that alternate reality becomes more and more threatening, and the need to find out whether it is real or not more and more urgent, no one will be able to pry the book out of your fingers.
As you may have gathered, the plot is very well-constructed, with more than its share of surprises. I’ll have to refrain from sharing any to avoid spoilers, but let’s just say I was caught completely off balance more than once, and that’s pretty hard to do with someone who has read as much as I have.
The novel’s characters, even the minor ones, are all fully developed and realistic, making it easy for a reader to care about them–or fear them, in a couple of cases. Fran Veal’s masterful descriptions complete the effect, making me feel as if I have visited the locations in the book, even though I have never been near any of them.
If you have time to read this book, do it! If you don’t have time, well, make time. It’s that good.
