Still trying to get the release over here...it's straightforward enough by contract, but tortuous when trying to work with huge publishers.

Any luck or timetable?

That's the problem, we don't know. The whole thing is beyond vexing.

You and me, both - the whole situation is driving me totally crazy - a case of the behemoths fighting and smashing the ants. It's been years and YEARS trying to resolve this - amazing I have not set my hair on fire.

Thanks, Darla, for your lovely comment - still trying to resolve the e rights issue for N. America for Empire. Sigh. Did you ever try my standalone To Ride Hell’s Chasm? Empire readers seemed to enjoy that one, and HarperCollins has put it into e format, meanwhile.

Anyone else having this problem or is it only Australia based?

There is no reason I know of, why the audio version should not be available in Australia - the only way to fix it if it's not available is to write to HarperCollins in Australia and also cc the customer service contact in Britain and ask why the link is not live.
Customers often get faster response than I can, though I will also send a query. Thanks for the heads up.

Depending how things resolve, finally - they may make a new audio version. Not sure how the pieces will fall, I'll post when I know more.

The good news - it will be happening at last!

You're welcome, least I can do. A book without an audience is nothing, so absolutely, you readers are just as important as the tale itself. I appreciate your interest and your patience!

Are we still only discussing the Riftwar trilogy, or does this mean that The Wars of Light and Shadow series will finally be released on audio? If not, why oh WHY have these not been put to audio yet? I wait year after year after year....

Empire is going into audio in the USA. No plans currently, for audio on Wars of Light and Shadow, to my knowledge - the rights are held by HarperCollins Voyager in London....it is entirely a numbers game. More readers, more readers, more readers - buzz and word of mouth. I would LOVE for this to happen - surest route is for the marketplace to demand it. Without an ad budget, the magic is reader-driven, so I am pleased to hear of your interest!

I guess I will have to continue holding my breath and crossing my fingers...

The better they do, the more Audible would look to acquire more. I have seen very very little mention of them, regardless of the fact they have stellar narrators (Simon Prebble did Master of Whitestorm - does it get any better?
The other way books get noted by audio companies: readers write in asking for them. I've been told there is a 'magic number' whereby such customer requests get a response.
If readers requested, also, directly to HarperCollins Voyager, LONDON (not USA) they might pay attention.
I would cry tears of joy if this happened, and I know my husband would, too, he is a huge audio fan.

That sounds strange if there is some magic number of requests---because I am almost certain fans have requested for years Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince and Dragon Star series, or well any of her other books as well, and they have never been done. Or Sara Douglass's books!! Shockingly all of David Gemmell's books are FINALLY being done now...so I keep hoping and praying WoLaS will be around the corner--especially with Destiny's Conflict on the way, I think it would be the perfect segue for new fans to come along. How does an author like yourself get any momentum for his/her books being put to audio? Is it easier if you had the rights? Or if you have/had made an audiobook agreement in the contract with the publisher?
I am listening through The Master of the Whitestorm again, and trying to make it last more than one day.
BTW, I would cry tears of joy relentlessly if WoLaS were put to audio too...! I have waited since around 2002 when I first stumbled upon your books!
You are one of maybe THREE authors where I sit back and take my sweet old time reading and almost dissecting each poetic sentence. I never feel in a hurry or rushed to finish one of your books; it is just that I cannot stop reading for like 12(or more) non-stop hours, and gobble up one of your books in 1 or 2 days. I really need to re-read WoLaS all over again, for the long time in between books(hence of why I am DYING for the audios now). I read over 200 fantasy books a year, and I just can keep track of everything when I jump back into a new WoLaS book.

The flip side of that downer is easy: of ALL types of exposure, the most effective, by lengths, no ad money can buy. Readers and word of mouth/their very own enthusiasm made public, or to friends, sells books faster and better than anything else.
Authors can only do so much.
It is easier if I had the rights, because then I could offer them to the marketplace....I had to choose, in 2007, whether to let audio rights go along with the contract to bring distribution of the series back into the USA (from London) AND to put the last volumes under contract, thereby getting ALL the books back into print again, worldwide - or keeping audio rights and searching out a new publisher. There was the worldwide economic crash going on at that time; so getting all the books back into print seemed more important.
I chose to rely on the books themselves finding their way, and trust in the readers who love them. Hearing from you is totally wonderful, because as you know, there is a whole LOT more in this series than one or even two readings will ever expose. And more coming. You may have a lot of difficulty not rushing through Destiny's Conflict!!! (you'll see why) so much comes to a head in that volume, and not at all in the way you'd expect. I can't wait....!

I really need to get started on re-reading WoLaS before Destiny's Conflict though. I typically both read and listen to a book---read with morning coffee, down time, etc, and then cue up the same book on audio while I am painting in my studio, or driving on commutes.... it is SOOOOO hard for me to read more than one book at once. As in-- listening to one book, and then reading WoLaS...guess I will have to try it though!!

This made my day.

Yay!!!! One of my favorites of all-time. :D I've been scouring for news on the audio release and am thrilled there's a timeline!
