message 1: by Mark (new)

Mark Is there any word on when this might be available in Australia?

message 2: by Janny (last edited Jul 18, 2014 07:11AM) (new)

Janny Hi Mark - it was produced by HarperCollins audio in London, so presumably it would be available there. Let me ask...

message 3: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson I have tried a few times they have stated it is not available in the US. I am dying to buy this, it is one of my favorite series.

Still trying to get the release over here...it's straightforward enough by contract, but tortuous when trying to work with huge publishers.

message 5: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson I hope soon. I am saving my audible credits to grab these when they come out.

Any luck or timetable?

message 7: by Janny (new)

Janny Not yet. Hear my teeth grinding?
It's apparently tied up in a publisher turf war. Extremely vexing!

message 8: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson So we could be looking at one month or one year. I am crossing my fingers.

Janny Dick wrote: "So we could be looking at one month or one year. I am crossing my fingers."

That's the problem, we don't know. The whole thing is beyond vexing.

message 10: by Martin (new)

Martin I am posting to share how much I would love this in an audiobook format in the US. I have read the books numerous times, but that is a bit of a problem while driving. Keeping my fingers crossed that the turf wars get resolved sooner rather than later. :)

You and me, both - the whole situation is driving me totally crazy - a case of the behemoths fighting and smashing the ants. It's been years and YEARS trying to resolve this - amazing I have not set my hair on fire.

message 12: by Martin (new)

Martin So, a bit of a side comment...you are an amazing writer! Thank you for all of your efforts, and it is very much appreciated. Until I can listen to it, I will just continue doing it the old fashioned way.

message 13: by Janny (new)

Janny Bless you, thanks! Bright words make a lonely job very sweet indeed!

message 14: by Darla (new)

Darla M I haven't read a lot of active fantasy in a long time, but Daughter, Servant & Mistress of the Empire stand out far and away as something unique and treasured reading that my mom & I shared when she showed me this series. I couldn't put the books down as a teen and have reread them a few times as an adult. Now I live by the audiobook and sincerely hope that this is resolved, I have been waiting for years to see these titles to relive them again. I am ecstatic to see this is trying to be resolved. I loved the honor & house mechanic/lifestyle and the strong & smart female lead in this series, the thoughts of spies, death, loyalty, power, politics in a world not my own. Thank you for working to make this happen and I will not hesitate to buy the audiobooks once they become available. Thank you for writing these books and working for an audio version!

Thanks, Darla, for your lovely comment - still trying to resolve the e rights issue for N. America for Empire. Sigh. Did you ever try my standalone To Ride Hell’s Chasm? Empire readers seemed to enjoy that one, and HarperCollins has put it into e format, meanwhile.

message 16: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson Someday, I have high hopes. My family is big on audio books with our busy lives, and my wife and daughters will dive into it when it arrives.

message 17: by Diana (new)

Diana Kube Clicking any of the audible links at the page gives us "Product Not Available" http://www.audible.com/pderror

Anyone else having this problem or is it only Australia based?

Janny Diana wrote: "Clicking any of the audible links at the page gives us "Product Not Available" http://www.audible.com/pderror

There is no reason I know of, why the audio version should not be available in Australia - the only way to fix it if it's not available is to write to HarperCollins in Australia and also cc the customer service contact in Britain and ask why the link is not live.

Customers often get faster response than I can, though I will also send a query. Thanks for the heads up.

message 19: by Diana (new)

Diana Kube Thank you for responding so quickly. As a vision impaired reader, I rely on audio or ebooks and I much prefer a competent narrator over a synthesized voice.

message 20: by Mark (new)

Mark All most another year past are they still working on a release for the US or should I quit holding my breath

message 21: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson Good question

message 22: by Janny (new)

Janny I checked; there's apparently paperwork sorting out the rights...but, summer slows at publishers....truly nobody wants this to happen more than me. The whole business has been tar slow, to the extreme, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

message 23: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoorah! I've been waiting for this forever!

message 24: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Oh shoot! I see it's not quite yet. Bummer.

message 25: by Lupus (new)

Lupus Fides Any updates on getting these in the USA? I've had no luck finding it through many sites...

message 26: by Janny (new)

Janny Yes. The deal is finally closing, now, last details being hammered out for the contract. There was an issue with territorial rights that had to be resolved, first, before the titles could be negotiated. Should have news on the e version and audio finalized quite soon. I will be as relieved as you readers to have the books available to you, worldwide.

message 27: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson Oh i hope soon. This is exciting news for me.

message 28: by Janny (new)

Janny Dick wrote: "Oh i hope soon. This is exciting news for me."

Depending how things resolve, finally - they may make a new audio version. Not sure how the pieces will fall, I'll post when I know more.

message 29: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson Is it a new company with rights? If so, I would guess they do their own.

message 30: by Janny (new)

Janny We just signed the contract addendum for audio and e books; so likely it will be a new production, though I should know in due time.

The good news - it will be happening at last!

message 31: by Martin (new)

Martin That is such exciting news, and a win for everyone. I am glad they finally figured that out. I don't care if it is 2 years before I am able to get my hands (ears) on this now that I know it is happening. YAY!

message 32: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson Yes, so pleased.

message 33: by Dick (new)

Dick Nielson I want to also thank you for keeping us informed. Hats off to you.

message 34: by Janny (new)

Janny Dick wrote: "I want to also thank you for keeping us informed. Hats off to you."

You're welcome, least I can do. A book without an audience is nothing, so absolutely, you readers are just as important as the tale itself. I appreciate your interest and your patience!

message 35: by Jan (new)

Jan M. Hi Janny,

Are we still only discussing the Riftwar trilogy, or does this mean that The Wars of Light and Shadow series will finally be released on audio? If not, why oh WHY have these not been put to audio yet? I wait year after year after year....

message 36: by Janny (new)

Janny Jan wrote: "Hi Janny,

Empire is going into audio in the USA. No plans currently, for audio on Wars of Light and Shadow, to my knowledge - the rights are held by HarperCollins Voyager in London....it is entirely a numbers game. More readers, more readers, more readers - buzz and word of mouth. I would LOVE for this to happen - surest route is for the marketplace to demand it. Without an ad budget, the magic is reader-driven, so I am pleased to hear of your interest!

message 37: by Jan (new)

Jan M. Oh that is still too bad about Wars of Light and Shadow. Who had the rights for the other 5 books that were put to audio? I would think that 'WoLaS' is a much more popular and lucrative series for a publisher to invest in. Or were they just testing the waters with these first 5 books? Most people like using there audible credits on LONG books, and the 'WoLaS' novels are tomes. I can guarantee that audible listeners would buy your books, and not even know your name or anything of the series, just based on the length of the book; and you would pick up countless new fans!
I guess I will have to continue holding my breath and crossing my fingers...

message 38: by Janny (new)

Janny The other books that were bought by Audible - I held the rights.

The better they do, the more Audible would look to acquire more. I have seen very very little mention of them, regardless of the fact they have stellar narrators (Simon Prebble did Master of Whitestorm - does it get any better?

The other way books get noted by audio companies: readers write in asking for them. I've been told there is a 'magic number' whereby such customer requests get a response.

If readers requested, also, directly to HarperCollins Voyager, LONDON (not USA) they might pay attention.

I would cry tears of joy if this happened, and I know my husband would, too, he is a huge audio fan.

message 39: by Jan (new)

Jan M. Ok I am going to right a letter/e-mail requesting these audios, then.
That sounds strange if there is some magic number of requests---because I am almost certain fans have requested for years Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince and Dragon Star series, or well any of her other books as well, and they have never been done. Or Sara Douglass's books!! Shockingly all of David Gemmell's books are FINALLY being done now...so I keep hoping and praying WoLaS will be around the corner--especially with Destiny's Conflict on the way, I think it would be the perfect segue for new fans to come along. How does an author like yourself get any momentum for his/her books being put to audio? Is it easier if you had the rights? Or if you have/had made an audiobook agreement in the contract with the publisher?
I am listening through The Master of the Whitestorm again, and trying to make it last more than one day.
BTW, I would cry tears of joy relentlessly if WoLaS were put to audio too...! I have waited since around 2002 when I first stumbled upon your books!
You are one of maybe THREE authors where I sit back and take my sweet old time reading and almost dissecting each poetic sentence. I never feel in a hurry or rushed to finish one of your books; it is just that I cannot stop reading for like 12(or more) non-stop hours, and gobble up one of your books in 1 or 2 days. I really need to re-read WoLaS all over again, for the long time in between books(hence of why I am DYING for the audios now). I read over 200 fantasy books a year, and I just can keep track of everything when I jump back into a new WoLaS book.

message 40: by Janny (new)

Janny I was recently informed there will be no outreach for new readers until the last volume; so - no effort.

The flip side of that downer is easy: of ALL types of exposure, the most effective, by lengths, no ad money can buy. Readers and word of mouth/their very own enthusiasm made public, or to friends, sells books faster and better than anything else.

Authors can only do so much.

It is easier if I had the rights, because then I could offer them to the marketplace....I had to choose, in 2007, whether to let audio rights go along with the contract to bring distribution of the series back into the USA (from London) AND to put the last volumes under contract, thereby getting ALL the books back into print again, worldwide - or keeping audio rights and searching out a new publisher. There was the worldwide economic crash going on at that time; so getting all the books back into print seemed more important.

I chose to rely on the books themselves finding their way, and trust in the readers who love them. Hearing from you is totally wonderful, because as you know, there is a whole LOT more in this series than one or even two readings will ever expose. And more coming. You may have a lot of difficulty not rushing through Destiny's Conflict!!! (you'll see why) so much comes to a head in that volume, and not at all in the way you'd expect. I can't wait....!

message 41: by Jan (new)

Jan M. Well I just sent an nice e-mail to Voyager UK requesting the audiobooks to be done. Hopefully it went to the right e-mail address. I asked them, to please pass on if it was not directed to the proper place.
I really need to get started on re-reading WoLaS before Destiny's Conflict though. I typically both read and listen to a book---read with morning coffee, down time, etc, and then cue up the same book on audio while I am painting in my studio, or driving on commutes.... it is SOOOOO hard for me to read more than one book at once. As in-- listening to one book, and then reading WoLaS...guess I will have to try it though!!

message 42: by Janny (new)

Janny Thank you for taking the time to write requesting the audio, I truly appreciate your enthusiasm. Fingers crossed.

message 43: by Janny (new)

Janny The happy news: Tania Rodriguez' narration of Daughter of the Empire has been licensed for release in the USA - roughly two months from now, it will be available to all.

message 44: by Jan (new)

Jan M. Awesome! I definitely could re-listen to this whole series in the near future. One always picks up on countless nuances when reading any of your works a second time. Especially when it has been as long I have had since reading 'The World on the Other Side Saga'...must be at least 14 years ago...
