Happy World Book and Copyright Day! UNESCO yearly makes April 23rd a day of worldwide reading, dedicated to the book, and what better way can you celebrate by supporting indie books? There are a number of ways that you can research and support indie authors and bookstores, but for myself, allow me a moment to highlight something I’ve recently put out, Dust McAlan and the Empire of the Serpent.
Empire of the Serpent is an all-ages adventure novel set in 1934, with treasure hunter Dust McAlan on the chase for a hidden, mythological city. It’s designed for primarily eleven year olds and upwards, but anyone comfortable with a light PG-13 film would be a suitable audience. The book features nineteen black and white illustrations by my brothers, Casey and Shon Burch, and the total package was put together by myself and my best friend, Jenna Rae. Jenna has been my promotional director and helped me produce the best possible product we could — this is my first true emphasis on print, as I’ve focused mostly on digital books in the past. All of them took time away from work to help construct this work of mine, which would not be nearly the same without their influence, something I’m incredibly grateful for. If you desire, you can find the print copy at Lulu, and the Kindle version at Amazon.
Support indie bookstores and authors today. Go downtown and find that little bookstore in the corner you’ve always wanted to check out, but haven’t done so yet. Look at the local section, or find a book with a “local author” sticker on it. Reblog this post so others can see. Every book is special, the product of hard work and sweat. Support reading and books today, and find yourself something to keep you entertained on the couch and forcing yourself to read just one more chapter.
