My Writing Process Blog Tour

I'm here to answer a few questions about my writing process. First, thanks to Natasha Blackthorne for setting up this tour. You can check out her writing process from last week's tour. She's got some fun things to say.

Here goes!

What am I working on?
I'm currently working on a novella for a Scottish romance bundle with six other authors to be released in November 2014. Yes, this is a Highland romance and is set in the late eighteenth century in Inverness. The hero returns home to marry his true love only to have her try every trick she can think of to get out of marriage. She has a secret and it could ruin them both.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
I love adventure! And my books reflect that. You will find thick plots in my stories with loads of political intrigue and usually some form of suspense and mystery with a strong romance as the driving force behind the story.

Why do I write what I do?
Historical romance is my first love. I adore the classics and this gives me a chance to let loose the poet in me. I love history and researching days gone by, so this is a great excuse to read!

How does your writing process work?
Usually, a story has to percolate for some time--years, even--before I start writing. I always start with rough opening scenes and notes on my characters' backgrounds and motivations. I usually write half or more of the book before doing any actual plotting, though my manuscript is riddled with notes on research points, motivation, goals, foreshadowing and the like. I spend far more time researching and plotting than I do actual writing. I keep all my daughter's partially used notebooks from school and fill the empty pages with notes and hand written scenes. I'm constantly searching for the most recent notes amongst my pile of notebooks. (I always have one of these notebooks with me in case I need to make notes.) I have a research library of about three hundred books, and growing. I take lots of breaks when I write to get up and move around for a few minutes. It keeps me thinking when I get stuck on a thought or plot turn, not to mention, keeps my body from turning into the unoiled tin man.
