Chuck's FF Challenge: Happy Pawn

Last week, I entered Chuck Wendig's Flash Fiction Challenge: The Return of the Opening Line Contest. The challenge for this week is to choose one opening line from the 500+ submissions, and write a flash fiction piece of about 1,000 words.
