“Weird” Cat Habits? As If!

Let's see who the REAL weird one is around here!

The other day I came across an article on the Pet360 website called “5 Weird Cat Habits.” You know I had to dig in and find out what this writer considered “weird” — and I was peeved, to say the least! I thought she would pick out things that seem to genuinely bewilder humans, such as our fits of activity fondly called “the zoomies,” the way we sometimes just stare at a blank wall (hint, it’s not really blank), or our chattering when watching Bird TV. Instead, the habits she picked out ranged from average, everyday cat behavior to gestures of generosity and kindness! Let me address each of these “weird” habits, one by one:

1. Kneading. Weird? Really? Doing something that feels good and dreamy is odd behavior? Then I guess humans need to stop meditating and having spa days. Kneading is how we kitties relax and recharge after a hard day of supervising humans and soaking up sun puddles. It’s also a great way to get the day started because it helps us focus. There are few more pleasurable ways to be in the Now than a good kneading session.

2. Chewing on plants. Huh? That’s weird? Then, I guess, so are humans eating salads. I was just flummoxed by this.

3. Face rubbing. This is not weird. It’s perfectly normal behavior. When something belongs to you, don’t you want to make sure everyone knows that? And since we cats don’t have the thumbs to use pens, we have to use our faces. Hey, it’s better than peeing on stuff.

4. Bringing gifts. Now that was just low! We cats go through all the effort of hunting down and catching something, and instead of keeping it for ourselves, we give it to our humans — and it’s called weird behavior! I’m insulted. And hurt.

5. Rolling. This happy gesture of greeting is considered weird? I just think that is sad. You want to know what is really weird? Humans who believe that just because we flopped down on our backs in their presence, they can go ahead and touch our tummies. Now that is weird, and bad etiquette.

Tell me kitties — is there any weird behavior, human or feline, going on at your house?
