My dear wonderful hubby and I have been together for over 20 terrific years. He knows me better than any other person on the planet and I love him to bits. One morning, he was debating whether to work from home or to work from the office.

Then I put on my big fluffy black sweatshirt.

He decided immediately to work from the office. When I asked why, he told me I was wearing the sweatshirt of doom. Whenever I don this garment, he knows I need alone time.

We all have our methods of communicating that we prefer to be alone. Sometimes it is as simple as a frown or lowered eyebrows. We might turn off our phones and disconnect our Wi-Fi. One of my buddies goes into the laundry room and locks the door.

When Nate, the hero of Breaking All The Rules, wants to be alone, he gives people the subzero freeze out. His expression is chilly. His voice drips with ice. His curt words shut down any attempts at conversation. He does this to keep others emotionally away, to protect himself.

Camille, the Goth girl heroine, uses a different approach. Although she works in a conservative high tech company, she sports green hair, tattoos, and piercings. She intentionally wears this shield, as she calls it, to warn people away. And it works. Her appearance frightens many of her more timid coworkers, convincing them to leave her alone.

The few souls brave enough to approach her are treated to a healthy dose of sarcasm. Camille is never mean, she’d be crushed if she ever caused anyone pain, but she isn’t overly friendly (unlike Kat, the heroine of Flashes Of Me). She’s also a random ball of energy. No one can predict what she will say or do next.

Like Nate, Camille does this to protect herself. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone or be hurt so she erects warning signs around her. Danger. Stay away. Don’t get close.

This is why Camille is immune to Nate’s frosty demeanor. She recognizes immediately what he’s doing, how he’s shielding himself from pain, and she doesn’t let this stop her from getting what she wants—a relationship with her Iceman.
