June 30, 1976

The diner smelled of percolating coffee, slightly burnt, and served only black. The linoleum was cracked, and the counter tops were a perpetual sticky no amount of scrubbing could clean. The waitresses wore lumpy, blue uniforms and thick, white-soled shoes.
