In romantic suspense it's pretty common to have at least one gun fired, if not more. If the heroine isn't in jeopardy, she's the kick-ass kind, and likely to be be the one doing the firing.
It makes for grand fiction, and helps raise your heart rate as you read it.
Fact is, a real gun fight is almost placid in comparison.
