In April of 2002 Kyle Field (Little Wings) and I (the Microphones) went on a small tour of the Palouse region in Eastern Washington/Northern Idaho. The shows were super bizarre. We were free-wheeling weirdos with little regard for how alienating or engaging we were being. A young filmmaker named Ryer Banta tagged along and documented the shows and did some interviews. It was later released as a relatively embarrassing DVD called Wise Old Little Boy. It’s a nice portrait of the daily realities of very small scale creative pursuits in that early internet age. We played and slept in students’ houses. Kyle made paintings on cardboard chunks from their garbage. We stopped the car and explored frequently. A stranger plays drums with the Microphones in a living room. We built a paper fortress and played inside it. We traveled with flashlights, butcher paper, ink, brushes, and flashlights. We were 2 good friends swept away in our own inside jokes and song experimentation. I have been pretty embarrassed over the years at my youthful brazen confidence, but now, 12 years removed, I’m glad these times were documented and I think they are interesting enough to show to others.
So, a last box of these DVDs was recently unearthed and here they are, for sale from P.W. Elverum & Sun directly. The bonus features are extended interviews and live performances, plus more.
