First lines

Over on A Tale Unfolds, Arkenaten listed opening lines of books he found on his shelves.

I thought I’d do the same, but with only the first line from some of my favorite books.

Andrew Hudson This book contains my favourite final line to a novel, but I won't share that. The first line is:
On the first page it says: "In the fresco I'm one of the figures in the background."
And that's from the "historical thriller" Q , by Luther Blissett. I'm very unhappy that I've managed to mislay my copy, because a third reading would otherwise be on the cards.

From yours, I like Hugh Howey's Wool opener a lot. And Goldman's The Princess Bride.

N.E. White Excellent choices. And that line from Q is intriguing. Makes me wonder who the speaker is and which painting he is talking about. Like all good first lines, makes me want to read more.
