Larry Scott: How to Build Your Biceps in Tribute to The Legend
I was saddened to hear about the recent passing of Larry Scott. Most of you know him as the first Mr. Olympia bodybuilding winner, the man with the incredible biceps, and the man who popularized the use of the preacher bench for arm work. But I was lucky enough to see another legendary side of the man.
In Spring 1992, I had the good fortune to meet and share some time with Larry at the Arnold Classic. What surprised me as a newcomer to him were his kindness, warmth, and gentleness. When he spoke to you, he was as intently focused on the conversation as any set of curls he did in the past. Even at 52, while standing in a modest tank top—those legendary arms still in their glory, he exuded humbleness. I’ve not seen that before or since.
I was so impressed with Larry that day, and for all the days afterward, that I re-printed one of his famous workouts in my first book, Supermen: Building Maximum Muscle for a Lifetime . This biceps workout is extremely effective and I’ve included the excerpt from the book below:
"This is Larry Scott’s famous biceps tri-set. It’s brutal, so the first time you do this workout, just perform 3 tri-sets and work up from there. The key here is how you perform each exercise. Use maximum weights throughout. On the first exercise, place you elbows high up on the bench’s pad and use any cheating necessary to get the six reps. Immediately pick up the barbell and sink your armpits into the top of the bench for the second exercise. This one you must do extremely strictly, especially the start of each rep. Absolutely no cheating here. Finally, pick up the E-Z bar and perform it just like the first exercise. If done correctly, this workout will provide you with an immense pump and some seriously soreness the next day."
Perform the following exercises, each for six reps, in a tri-set (aim for 3-5 tri-sets):
Dumbbell Preacher Curl (loose form)
Barbell Preacher Curl (strict form)
Reverse Preacher Curl with E-Z Curl Bar (loose form)
