The very first review for Ardalia: The Breath of Aoles
The blog Piece of My Mind is the very first to publish a review for the science-fantasy novel Ardalia: The Breath of Aoles. Many thanks to Ailyn Koay for an honest review.
Author: Alan Spade
Series: Ardalia book 1
Genre: alien, adventure, fantasy
ASIN: B00IO2SIXM
Synopsis from Amazon: Lured away by the prospect of untold riches, Teleg, a carpenter, finds himself a prisoner of the Nylevs, fierce fire-wielding worshippers of the god of destruction. Now Pelmen, a young archer, must overcome his fears and travel across the land, in search of his childhood friend. Along the way, he will ally himself with strange beings: a shaman who controls the Breath of Aoles, or the power of the wind, a krongos, a creature who can become living rock, and a malian, adept at water magic.
If this is a game, it would be an RPG where Pelmen is the hero. This game will start with a FMV where you would see Pelmen being disgruntled with his life as a tanner. Then a short cut scene later, you can use Pelmen to train as an archer, then cue cut scene.
Done right, this might just be a game where Pelmen engages in tutorials and mock battles, throw in some random monster and I can see him leveling up as he moves up long the boss fight to save his friend.
Jokes aside, Alan Spade is a game reviewer, I should say this because that was how I felt before even knowing that he is a game reviewer. All I felt was that this could be a fellow gamer writing a script for a well thought out game.
You might be angry at me for saying this, but even games have to be thought out, and pre-scripted for an RPG to progress. How do you think Final Fantasy games get so popular?
Back to this book, I did find it a bit slow in some bits and faster paced at others. Pelmen is an interesting enough but it is the world and its supportive characters that gives the book a unique feel. We have krongos, malian, hevelen and a few more species that makes up the land of Astrian.
A few battles and cut scene later, Pelmen emerges successful, and like a good trilogy game, there is a sequel. So I am looking forward to Turquoise Water.
Summary:
Interesting story but a little on the long side
unique characters: cover is pretty correct =P
