On useless crap.

I love New Year's resolutions. I appreciate the impetus to take a look at my life, and choose something I'd like to do differently, and then acting on that desire instead of letting it nag the back of my mind. That's why I actually take my resolutions very seriously, and I even announce them on Facebook to hold myself accountable.

This year my resolution was not to buy anything for myself for a year. No sweaters, no shoes, no boots, no underwear or socks. No hats, no coats, no tchotchkies, no...

Charlie No, not extreme but rather sensible. At a certain point, you realize that we don't own our stuff, our stuff owns us. Every possession is an obligation, every obligation an aggravation, and who needs more of that?

As Steven Wright observed, "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?"

Amy Ryan That's just how it feels to me. I like an uncluttered house, but if we keep buying things we don't need, that becomes impossible. That's another reason I decided I don't need to buy anything more. And another unexpected benefit is that I enjoy the clothes I already have even more. I appreciate them.
