Special Guest: HK Carlton
Hello my lovelies,
I'm over at the wonderful Siobhan Muir's blog today (http://bookgratitude.blogspot.com/2014/03/author-of-week-sage-marlowe.html), revealing what gave me the courage to take the big step and become a self-employed writer. I love the concept of Siobhan's gratitude blog, so please take a look around, there are lots of other authors to discover.
But before you rush over there, please give a warm welcome to the lovely HK Carlton who has succumbed to my nosy questions and brought a steamy excerpt.
Hi HK, it's great to have you back! Please take a seat, grab some coffee and let's get started with
The business ones
What genre(s) do you write in and why?
I write several different genres and sub-genres. I will write whatever kick my muse is on at any given time. I go with the flow. It’s easier on my brain. LOL. So, far historical romance, contemporary-erotic romance and family saga are the main genres and the subs so far include, ménage m/f/f, some mild bondage and slightly dubious consent, time-travel and I even tried my hand at an m/m story.
Tell us about your latest release
My latest release is an m/f contemporary erotic romance with Totally Bound entitled Rock Me Gently, about a rocker, Jase West, who gives up the life-style to become a secondary school history teacher. :D On his first round of parent-teacher conferences, he meets Lainey Clarkson, the mom of one of his students; and a whole new harmony begins.
Do you need a special setting to write in or do you have a ceremony to get you in the mood? What does it look like?
Nope, I’ll write anywhere, anytime; laptop, desktop, keyboard, pencil and paper, office, living room, bedroom, kitchen. It doesn’t matter. I’ve been known to write while waiting in the car for children to come out of school, work, etc.
Describe your feelings when you learnt that your first book was accepted for publication
Shock. Disbelief. Joy. And then anxiety because I had no idea what I was doing or what to expect next.
Has the release of your first book changed anything in your personal life? If so, what?
I am a lot busier. There doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to keep up with everything.
Where do you find inspiration?
I can find inspiration in just about anything. Songs. A phrase. The weather. Observing other people. In fact one of my upcoming stories Hard and Fast, came about after a chance encounter with an extremely good-looking repairman, as I was leaving the bank one day this past summer. It was an extremely hot and humid day. It’s funny how sharing some short and sweet pleasantries about the weather can turn into such steamy inspiration. Yes, my mind went there. And he’ll probably never know that he inspired a prequel and a sequel. But he will get a nice dedication. J
Who is your favourite character and why?
My favourite is usually whomever I am writing at the time. I have a habit of falling for my characters. But if I had to pick just one it would have to be Gard Marschand from my historical romance The Devil Take You. And the reason, because he was rotten to the core and I still fell for him.
Your favourite drink and food when writing
Coffee and dry cereal, either Cap n’ Crunch or Honey Nut Cheerios. I also like almonds or cashews, when they’re in the house.
The nosy ones
How much of the real “you” is in your stories?
In the earlier stories a lot. But I think I’ve worked that out now. It was therapeutic and now I’m healed. I think. But you never know when I might relapse.
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Who was it?
A Crush on one of my own, Gard as I’ve already mentioned, or Niall from You Found Me. He has a bit of my husband in him. Or let me rephrase that, a bit of what I’d like to think my husband is like. I also have a thing for the male protags in my upcoming family saga series, Randy and Victor from Always Cambridge. But if we’re talking other author’s books, Karen Marie Moning’s hunks, Jericho Barrons, Adam Black and Dageus MacKeltar. I also have a thing for Donna Gallagher’s Brodie James from the first book in the League of Love Series, although Gareth Andrews is pretty up there too. Janet Chapman’s Greylen MacKeage has a piece of my heart too. I could probably go on. But I won’t. :D
What’s the silliest error in a book you’ve submitted?
Oh, there are so many silly little things, I couldn’t possibly pick just one. :D But it is usually independent body parts that have me chuckling the most when I get my edits back.
Who is your least favourite of the characters you’ve written? Why?
Lorenzo Mayhue, from Always Cambridge. He’s a man without a conscience and I had to make him do really nasty things to my heroine and heroes.
The steamiest scene from your books
Maybe not the steamiest, but in honour of being here, a little snippet from my one and only m/m story, so far. ;) Although the fourth instalment of the series I’m working on right now for MuseItHOT, is also. :D
Better Than Another Man
Carey stood, chuckling, and took his empty plate over to the sink. “Have you given any more thought to coaching?” he asked, turning to face me.
“Not really. I haven’t thought past getting my dad back on his feet.” Was that his way of asking if I was going to move to Chicago with him?
“Seriously, Bryan, what the fuck are you going to do with the rest of your life?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve never known.” I joined him, placing my plate on top of his. “Nothing feels right.” I didn’t just mean work-wise, either, and I think he got that. “I don’t want a career like you, Care, I just need a job to pay the bills. It doesn’t really matter, does it?”
“I just want you to be happy,” he said, cupping my cheek, then he kissed me softly. My body warmed and my cock stirred. Carey wound his arms around me and pulled me closer, rubbing his own growing erection against mine. We ran our hands over each other’s backs, as the kiss got hotter.
“Close your eyes,” he whispered. I did as he asked as he worked his hands down my chest, unfastening my jeans. I helped him push the stiff denim over my hips. He released my cock from my loose boxers.
A buzz of excitement ran through me as I anticipated his touch, but then I tensed when I felt his warm breath fan across my abdomen, indicating that he’d taken his knees in front of me. I placed my hands on either side of his neck, pulling upward, signalling for him to stand.
“No, Care, don’t,” I begged. I couldn’t allow him do that to me. The thought of him giving me head was both tantalising and shocking to me all at once. But he’d known what my reaction would be, that’s why he’d instructed me to close my eyes.
He patted my stomach soothingly. “It’s alright. I won’t do anything you don’t want. Stop me at any point.” He took my dick in his hands like before skilfully stroking until I couldn’t think. I made every attempt to clear my mind and just enjoy the gift he was about to give me.
Carey ran his tongue across the tip of my straining shaft. His soft warm lips closed over the slit, sucking ever so softly before he fluttered his tongue into it, licking the liquid that had gathered. “Mmm,” he murmured.
“Ohh,” I breathed, placing my backside against the counter ledge for support, splaying my legs slightly. I released my hands from around his neck and slid them into his hair; no longer fighting it.

Thank you so much for being my guest today, HK, and now let's take a look at your book:

Rock-god Jase West has it all. Millions of adoring fans around the globe, money, women, cars and the talent that afforded him the extravagant lifestyle he enjoys. Until one day, when he takes a good look at himself and doesn’t like what he sees.
After fulfilling his contractual obligations, Jase quits the music business and goes back to school. Re-emerging as Jason Westlake, history teacher.
During Jason’s first set of parent-teacher interviews, he meets Lainey Clarkson, the single mother of one of his students, and he is immediately drawn to her. But Lainey is in the midst of a nasty divorce from a semi-famous pro football player and the last thing she wants is a relationship, especially with someone who is, or has been, in the limelight. However, Jason is pleasantly surprised to find that Lainey has no idea of his alter ego Jase West and decides to keep his celebrity status a secret for the time being until she falls for him. Reasoning that by then it will be too late for her to just walk away.
But when Lainey finds out that she has been lied to and manipulated again, Jason has to put on the performance of his life to win her back. Or for once, will the guy who’s used to getting everything lose out on the best thing that’s ever happened to him?
